Dunno Stringer, not sure that 600-700 million would put this movie into much if any profit when you consider marketing costs which are astronomical for a movie like this. That's part of the reason that Disney lost money on Solo.

It'll make a billion because lots of fans enjoyed it and will see it multiple times

oh sure Superb, i'm going the film was made off a 250 mil budget, but yes, you could easily add another 200 mill to that.
I mean Ford coming back, ain't cheap.
what was it.
Fisher got 1 million for FA
Hamill got 2 Million for FA
Ford got 25 Million...

wait, i just heard something... i must of missed this.
did the Hobbit say Palps was Cloned?

Hamill only got 2 million for FA ? Admittedly he didn't even say one word but they would have had to completely changed everything had he refused to be in it.

And would some of that fee included his contract to star in Last Jedi as well right ? Considering how badly they bastardised Luke's character in this trilogy I'm hoping Hamill got paid very well.

I think this time round they may have negotiated points like Sir Alec got for A New Hope..
and i think 2 million was just for FA.
Imagine getting a percentage of 2 Billion?

Yeah exactly what I was thinking. Hamill needs to fire his agent if he didn't get some kind of percentage or get a considerably higher amount of money than two million for being in this trilogy.

The reason why i don't think they spent over 400 million is that to me, thats just bad business planning. very risky, regardless of the IP.
And they'd want to maximise profits and they must of known after TLJ, that tracking would've shown a trend going down.
But with the major re-do's from Trevorow's script to bringing back JJ and rewriting the thing in a short time.
Marketing and bringing back Ford, buying media reviews (cough), Reshoots etc, it's possible this went over 400 Mill.
If Box Office Mojo has N/A in it's column still, then that's dubious..
TFA was a £245 Mill Budget..

but why should Star Wars be held to that standard, no one else is, well maybe James Cameron does care, but a Billion is a lot.

I’m old school when it comes to the Box Office.
Make 2.5 times the budget, and it’s a success.
So I reckon, 600-700 million is the real target.
The whole Billion thing is just optics and bragging rights.
But yeh, if it doesn’t reach a Billion, they will get slated for it.
Also, Star Wars franchise has no traction in China... I think the problem stems from the other 6 never screening over there originally and now coming in at Ep 7, might have been a jump too far, and I don’t think they really care for it.

Budget is only making the movie. Add marketing cost and 2.5 times the budget is not a success. 600 mil is probably a flop.

I think people should just enjoy it for what it was, visually great, sound track was great, some acting was a bit wishy washy, some of the story didn't make sense, but they had to do something to save this film and they filled it with loads of star wars nostalgia which tugged a few heart strings. I think we get caught up with wanting something to be like the original but better. But that can't be achieved because that beginning happened at that moment and cannot be recreated. This trilogy wasn't great and I think the ROS is parallel with rogue one in terms of the best ones they've done with Disney. Hopefully they've learnt some lessons going forward and with mandalorian doing well they should take notice of that and continue to build up the stories. It's just a shame they fecked up the last three, but ended it reasonably well with this one. It is what it is. 👍

yeah, that's the overall budget, which never really gets disclosed, but they usually say what the production budget was. So you're saying 2.5 x isn't considered a success?

yeh Loco, hope so too. I think they will.
Disney will always have that card up their sleeve, and say Kennedy wasn't their choice.

In terms of box office success, I'd consider anything below a billion for Star Wars a failure. Hopefully TROS makes less and Kathleen Kennedy is replaced by someone that is fit to helm this iconic and beloved franchise.

Yeah I hope so too. I've been hearing that KK might be replaced very soon although by another woman as opposed to someone like Favreau. Quite discriminatory if KK's replacement has to be a woman but there you go. Personally I just want the best person for the job regardless of gender because Kennedy is far from that.
