Are GB taking a team to the Olympics?

-----------------------------------------

Good question. I had the feeling London was a one-off.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I liked it. Gave players like Butland a platform and tou8rney experience and I think it would be beneficial to younger players like Rashford.

I imagine, if he does go, it'll be in the role of an inside forward or wide attacker (same for Welbz, Sturridge, Theo, if he goes)... So the fact that the four striker positions are filled doesn't mean as much.

Me too.

It's the FAs worrying about compromising their independent status within FIFA that gets in the way.

Thing is we've been here before with young players just breaking through. Rashford is doing really well, and could be an amazing player. But there's enough established players in the England squad ahead of him. Get him in the U21's to give him used to playing international football without the pressure.

I'd take him.

On the other hand, I reckon Lingard has a decent claim. He's basically a senior player at United now and one of the better performers this season.
===================================

No he has not been one of our better perfromers.

Michael Owen went to France 98 at a similar age.

What were Owen's stats beforehand?

I think hed be a good bench option. could make an impact like owen did in france.

I don't think Rashford is as explosive as Owen was as the same age.

Cant you see similarities with Owen going to the WC in 98?

At that time England had

Shearer
Fowler
Cole
Merson
Ferdinand
Sheringham
Le Tissier

and Owen still went

I saw it on sky sports news in the morning. Anyway I think Martial playing behind Rashford is best way to go as Rashford is the better striker and Martial is good at bypassing a few of the opposition players to allow for space for Rashford. Herrera also did great at winning ball high up the pitch, suprised he didn't play against Spurs.

Hadn't Owen had a full-on breakthrough season before that summer though? I seem to remember him bursting on the scene on the first day of the season in August, and was basically LFC's first choice striker in 97-98. I may be wrong - rubbish memory.

in the season before 23 goals in 44 games.

tbf owen was never really potential, he took to senior football like a duck to water.

Lingard is a bad footballer, point blank

the guys useless, gives away the ball contantly, very rarely does anything of note and he does is run.

polayers like him getting games are half the reason were in a dogfight for 5th and 6th.

A player is either awful or brilliant in strettys opinion.

Isn't Owen a precautionary tale? He'd had a full season under his belt by the time went to the WC in 98. But look what happened later in his career. Same could be said of Rooney & Walcott. They all broke through really early but went off the boil by the time they were nearing 30.

Ferdinand scored 5 goals that season. Le Tissier 11. Cole 17. Shearer was blighted by injury and got just 2 league goals. Fowler (displaced by Owen at Liverpool) scored 9. Sheringham 9. Merson was having a great season - at Middlesbrough in the second tier. Owen's 18 league goals surpassed all of them.

There's no real comparison in terms of how proven Rashford is at the moment.

I think he is right - Owen never linked the play as well as Rashford does. He didn't have as many tricks, wasn't a threat from free kicks and couldn't play from the wide positions as well. That said, Rashford still has a lot to do to reach Owen's level at his peak.
