Sterling and too many others loooked like they were more interested in producing a bit of skill than a decent final ball.
There seems to be a trend atm of players being liked with fast feet who look like they are doing the river dance instead of players with a final ball like Beckham.
Sterling is absolute tosh. The only reason he occasionally beats a player is because nobody (including himself) knows what the hell is going on.

I thought Sterling was very good in the first half, creating chances and giving their right back a hard time with his pace. He was the main player in creating two or England's best chances of the half, one were he took on a couple of players on their right and back heeled it to Rose who played it onto Alli's head with Alli fluffing it. Second half he faded. Not much for the midfield to aim at as Kane always seemed to be outside the box blasting the ball over the bar everytime he got it.
Rooney I thought was England's best player and the game was crying out for Alli to come off for Wilshere with Rooney pushing up and Kane replaced for Sturridge or Vardy, even at 1-0 up that was the move, Kane was too easy to mark, England needed a runner in behind to push them back.
Lallana also had a good game but seriously needs to work on his finishing. Walker was good too. Other than that there were players out there offering nothing and they stayed on the pitch way too long. England have such good options from the bench in attack for once and despite Hodgson saying he favoured attackers rather than midfielders and defenders, which showed in his squad selection, he failed to use them. Poor management.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What he did right pales into insignificance agst what he did wrong. The Rose set up is a great example of him running into a cul-de-sac and getting bailed out by a team mate who makes a gut busting run. That makes Sterling look good, but the fact is that was down to Rose.
Time and time again yesterday Sterling ran down the line until he got held up by a defender and then, and only then does he start thinking who do I pass too....the amount of times he had a great pass on to a team mate and did not do it due to lack of awareness was countless.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You clearly lack an understanding of football. There are many ways to create chances for a wide player. You have the simple running down the line and crossing it as the most used example for the lesser players. For the better ones and the example where Sterling got it to Rose for one of England's best chances of the game, he dragged two players with him using his pace and skill and tactical awareness, which created a gaping hole for Rose to exploit. It was Sterling that made Rose look good in that move by doing all the work whilst Rose simply ran on to the ball and crossed it.
Let's not start the because you don't agree with me you don't understand football claims....it is so childish. We just have different opinions and views on the game and leave it as that.

If you like.
It's no surprise to Liverpool fans and I'm guessing City fans that Sterling has been criticised for his final end product. It's always been lacking in his game and something he needs to develop and develop quickly if he is to take the next step.
However, I still think he's our best option in that position. Tactically he's smart and he does give us some much needed pace and drive in the team.
Kane for me was poor last night. Sterling at least provided a threat, where Kane looked limited and pedestrian. With the strikers we had on the bench and the way the game panned out, (England on top and scoring first), I was shocked he wasn't hooked and ended up shouting at the TV after 78 minutes.
However, all in all thought England were excellent last night. This scapegoating and knee jerking isn't required. The performance itself was enough to show me that if we can keep that level up we may do better than many critics expected (myself included).

Sterling's best position is at the tip of a diamond. Where he an run at people and go either way. He just hits constant dead ends when played out wide
Sterling was part of a team that nearly and should of won its first game in a euros for some time,id offer some constructive criticism of Sterling but you don't deserve it,he was flavour of the month going into this game with 3 assists and this is whats waiting for him the moment he falters, your all full of cack
Should have taken Townsend instead.

No me neither................he was absolutely awful.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think he began the game very good. Good runs down the line. He misses the cutting edge though. His crosses were awful and not accurate enough.
When the game went on he faded and dissappeared. He really lacks the end product.
Agree with TOOR in the first half Sterling was very good.
Second half he made some poor decisions and lost confidence, the team as a whole wasn't as effective 2nd half though.
Also agree that Kane was poor.
He was poor for England U21's last summer also and their are question marks over him in tournament football at the moment. Let's see how he does against Wales. Another poor performance and I would drop him against Slovakia and let either Sturridge or Vardy start down the middle.
We did a lot right yesterday and should have won the game. People are blaming Hodgson and I can see the argument about bringing pace on after we had scored but it wasnt his fault we totally dominated the first half and couldn't score, that was our poor finishing.
He set the team up well and Rooney was excellent in midfield which was a brave choice considering the stick he would have got had it failed.
Walker over Clyne was also a positive choice that paid off as Walker was excellent too and attacks better than Clyne can.
Lots of positives for me, but of course tournament football is about winning games. That's 8 games under Hodgson at tournaments and we have only won 2 of them, with 4 draws and 2 defeats.
We are competitive but ultimately the flaws in our team are too easily exposed.

What is the difference between Sterling and Walcott?
I agreed with the decision not to name Walcott in the squad considering how poor he's played this season, but on the evidence of Sterling's display last night it looks like that was a mistake

That's not really the answer of my question.
Walcott in my view is more of a goal threat than Sterling playing like this after a very average season I concede that.

Rooney will be exposed in midfield against a team that doesn't let him have space on the ball.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Possibly true, in fact Russia did deny him space and time in the 2nd half....but then again the same view was held over Pirlo yet he seemed to endure
Walcott
He's barely had a good half for about 2 years.
He was a very effective player a few years ago but injuries and Wenger have done for him.
Sterling is a far more intelligent and tactically aware player than Walcott. Walcott had great end product for a couple of seasons but his time has probably gone. Players with lightning pace who start that young generally get worse when injuries start hitting.

That back heel resulted in Rose playing the ball across the six yard box behind the defenders ALONG THE GROUND!!! Alli had no chance of getting it & certainly did not fluff it.
Sterling is very much a one trick pony, push him down the line and hasn't a clue what to do next.
