Ballack was a brilliant player although I think Chelsea got him a little past his peak years. For Leverkusen and Bayern he was a lot better IMO.
Baz
TBF to Shaw he has 2 very good seasons for Saints before we bought him.
More like one and a half, and I wouldn't say 'very good'. Decent seasons were about as good as you could push it

Viera and Essien were different in their play. Both brilliant players although personally I'd go with Viera.

So would I.

So would I to be fair. Not much in it though for me.

probably was, but still one of the best players i've seen at chelsea. Had it all. Can't think of a weakness, other than maybe pace, but he read the game so well so rarely got beaten to the ball

A guy has one good season and now he is the second coming of Makelele, dear
---
We bought Shaw with the same background and some on here were saying he was the next bale, despite not having any of bales technical attributes.
----------------
No, no, no, no, no. People said Shaw was the next Wayne Bridge, not the next Gareth Bale.

Always felt his Chelsea contribution was a little undervalued. He wasn't given the same freedom at Chelsea, and yes he didn't have the legs he once did, but his ball retention was fantastic.

No, 2 very good seasons, one of which he was voted in the PL team of the season.
No doubt Ballack was good for Chelsea, just not in the same class as his Leverkusen/Bayern days.
Thats a long winded way to say you changed your mind.

It's allowed.
Surely one of the main points of debates like this is to try to present different arguments, a by-product of which could be that you persuade someone on to your line of thinking?
No, no, no, no, no. People said Shaw was the next Wayne Bridge, not the next Gareth Bale.

I did see quite a few bale comments.
They'd obviously never watched him play.

Not really much different from Kante then?

I think (hope) that it was more about not missing out on a talented young player from Saints as we did with Bale.
Yes it is different because he had 2 seasons in the PL where he impressed. I've already stated this.
Not all that different, 82 in terms of the original point.
Elvis- perhaps in some,, others clearly seemed to think he had bales ability. Hope he comes back from injury where he left off, but he does need to add more to his forward game, for me, to be a top class fullback. Got all the defensive and physical attributes, just lacks the attacking skills of the best fullbacks.
Yes his final ball has been disappointing, although he does get into good positions.
After Keane and viera. Essien is probably the best box to box player to play in the PL with more of a defensive side to his game.
Lambeau good of you to admit you were wrong. Fair play.

He does. Needs someone to play it into space for him as he can't beat players through skill, and his assist stats are very low throughout his career. But he's young, and can work on that, he's got the defensive side nailed.
"Not all that different, 82 in terms of the original point."
Yes there is, Kante has had 1 great season in the PL, Shaw has had 2 very good seasons in the PL before he joined us. That is 100% more to prove his ability.
If Kante had a very second season then those people still wary would be far less cautious of him.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Also, did Pogba not play at the Euros in an unfamiliar DM role? I.e. in Kante's position?
How highly rated can Kante be by the national team if an attacking player 2 years younger than him is picked to play in his preferred position?
I would rather see more of a box to box player who can link up with attack instead of a DM anyway. I think we have at least 4 players who can perform the DM role already.
managers, especially international always have to pick the bigger names sadly. Pogba was useless this tournament.
for 100 mill it shouldnt be a stretch to play a dm role
overall pogba was average at best
redmisty
Doesn't always work like that. Deschamps buckled under pressure and put Pogba in a position he is wasted just to keep other players in the team.
Nickalopodis (U9257)
Theres probably some truth to that but ultimately managers still want to win. If Kante was playing better I'm sure he could have forced his way in.
Funnily enough, the French squad that won the world cup in '98 did so without Cantona and Ginola. Can you imagine England leaving out players like that?
