Didn't see the game but from all of the reports and comments etc it seems like just another wednesday game to me. We got a point away from home 1st of the seaon mind. So if we were that bad and still got something out of it then thats us turning a corner cos at Bury we were awful and got totally played off the park.

So all in all same old stuff different day except we got our first away point.

Played 6 W3 D1 L2

Hartlepool are in 6th spot with the same 10 points as us!

Weaver injured before the game along with COG and JJ. Lowe injured during the game after very little time to prove his worth. Sorry guys, but my cup remains half full and we still have almost an entire season to gell as a team!!

Well fair enough but Weaver ain't gonna win us the league and neither are Lowe or O'Grady unless we get them some service. Hate to say it but we need JJ back..

It was a poor game to watch, the first half both teams were poor O'Donnell howler beaten at his near post for the goal, after that Charlton had 2 clear cut goal scoring chances and fluffed them. They were only a little bit better than us in the first.
Second half we looked better and when Clint scored we woke up and seemed to take it to them a bit more. Charlton never improved and the real disappoinment was that the 3pts were there for us to take from an off form at-home Charlton.

The football itself was poor for the most part, loose passes allover, overhit or underhit. Poorly controlled balls going out of play or to the opposition.
That simply has to improve because that was not a promotion squad even if we did have a couple of lads missing.

Also, the ref was terrible. Michael Morrison was an absolute thug all night nailing our players left and right, he smashed Lowe twice causing his injury before moving onto Clinton, should have seen red twice easily, again the ref had a shocker..

Still early doors but a point at Charltons yard should be more than enough for us to be optimistic despite the dire performance.

We are so sh**e that we just got a point away at one of the better teams in the league. We have a 100% record at home. I am disappointed we don't have 18 points. C**t players need shooting.

Yes JJ is missed at these types of games.

Overall I think we played ok, it was a lively enough game but not much quality on show.

Jones was good at the back - height was a good advantage.

We sorely lacked width and a creative midfield. That said Charlton were a decent enough side.

A good point IMHO.

The performance was poor, hasn't Megson told them how to pass because if he hasn't there's a good teacher at my old school that if we didn't pass properly he kicked the ball in our face, but a draw against fellow promotion candinates is a good result.

Don't really know why we are so down beat. Last few years we would have lost this game 3 or 4 nil. This is a positive result and we should applaud it. Remember back in 79 the pork were way above us untill October then went almost into freefall after Boxing day. We will go up and not through the playoffs

We should be relieved with a point from that game, it was daylight robbery. We created next to nothing, with a little bit more composure from Charlton they should have made it a fairly easy win.

I was disappointed last night with our wing play. At hardly any point did we see them attempting to beat the full back and get crosses into the box, either with the ball or without the ball allowing the center-midfielders to play through balls. More often than not when they had the ball into feet the cut back inside and went back to center-mid, who went back to center-back who chipped in aimlessly forwards hoping for magic from Madine.

We're not getting promoted this season unless we improve our attacking play, actually start causing the opposition some problems.

Defensively we were alright, much better dealing with long balls down the center than the last time I saw us. The goal was pretty weak from both defenders and goalkeeper, but apart from that... Thought Prutton and Semedo looked decent in central midfield and Madine looked a handful up front (even more so if he ever gets some decent service.)

"obsessed with holding on to what we've got".....

Eh? We were a goal down in three minutes - it could've gone horribly wrong. Instead, we pulled a goal back and held on for a draw away at 'promotion favourites' Charlton....can't see what's wrong with that.

Definitely felt like a point earned last night, a good result against a team that will be challenging for promotion. I’m sure if we could draw away from home against every team likely to be in the top 6 this season we’d all take that now. Clearly the issues here are the manner in which the result came about. For me personally I thought we gave too much respect from the outset, fielding a 451 formation signalled our intent. Unfortunately we don’t have the players to adopt this formation. Madine is still very raw and learning his trade, expecting him to lead the line, hold the ball up whilst outnumbered by defenders, close down players and be a goal threat is too much to expect, especially while receiving minimal support from midfield. IMO our midfield sat 20 yards too deep in the first half, conceding possession and inviting Charlton onto us, allowing crosses to come from more dangerous positions. In the second half we pushed to the halfway line thus allowing us to exert pressure on their midfield, force errors and make them cross from further out (crosses which were much easier for Jones/Batth to deal with).

In conclusion, for me, a good point earned. Lets be more assertive from the off and build on this with a win against MK Dons. Finally big praise from me to Buxton for not only continuing to be a dependable, athletic and solid rightback BUT also our most effective outlet and attacking option so far this season, a player much vilified in the past that deserves recognition for his input and strength of character over the last season.

FFS whats wrong with some of you lot.
Yes we were poor last night, but a point against Charlton, who most were tipping to be champions, is a very good point regardless how we achieved it. A big praise to the Wednesday fans who made it last night as we are magnificent.
Look at Southampton at the start of last season and i'm sure you will all remember, they were down near the bottom, this time last season until they got their s..t together.

Agree with what you say about width but I blame Megson for the tactics. We have 2 wingers in Marshall and Sedgwick yet he took one off, admittedly to change the formation and the other seemed to be more central. We should let them play out wide and get the ball to them.

I like Madine but he needs some kind of service. So far Lines is completelty anonymous unless it's a set-piece so I would drop him to the bench for now.

Charlton won't be champions on that evidence and Southampton may have been down the bottom this time last season but they would've still been confident as they have a good squad.

I would rather have got beat 1-0 last night but put in a good performance with lots of chances created as at least that way you know, sooner or later, the goals will come.

Having said that, I would take another point on Saturday and hope we can beat Stevenage. I think out best bet is to try and be top 6 come January and sign a few more players in the window and try and push on for top 2. Can't see automatic with this team and tactics.

PS agree with the praise for the fans - good support, much better than last year. At least Megson seems to have the crowd backing.

Flipping heck man.
Southampton were getting mauled all over the place, at the beggining of last season and we were riding high. a few shocking games, doesn't end our season and Charlton were shocking also, but they have been playing really well, so on your asumption, this means that last niughts game means they are no where near promotion candidates.
Keep the faith man, as a fully fit squad from Wednesday will be hammering most teams in this league.
I for one am happy we are in this posistion now rather than a false position, like last season. we can only improve IMO so playing poorly and 6 points off auto promotion, will do for me now.
I dont rate mego, but i'm confident we will be there or there abouts, come may.

Cut and pasted off the match thread:

So Charlton are third and unbeaten but we're rubbish cos we only took a point off them at their place? They put us under a huge amount of pressure, that midfield was carnage, that's why it was such an unattractive game, but the point is our MF held up, under previous management our MF would have caved in exposing the previously inexperienced defence and we'd have lost by several goals. I agree it wasn't pretty, I agree we didn't look like world beaters but we are moving in the right direction.

Calm down mate - I never said our season was over did I? All I'm saying is forget the points we have and look at the performances and players instead and I don't think we'll be where we should be, which is top 2.

Southampton weren't getting mauled all over the place at the start of last season: they lost a few matches in a row then got Adkins, came to our place and won and the rest is history. The point is they had a lot better players than we do, a lot better.

I'm not sure how you can say we'll be 'hammering most teams in this league' either - which world class players were we missing last night that'll help us do this?
