If an Alien walked into my home I would kill it with a hammer. The only question I would be asking would be after the fact and along the lines of "What the F is that thing?"

I think we'd be quite naive not to treat extra terrestrials as a threat. What possible benefit could an advanced species gain from making contact with a warmongering one like ours. I'm assuming they would have studied us beforehand and arrived at the logical conclusion that if they shared their technology with us we would use it to exterminate them the second it was to our benefit; like if our planet was dying/about to be destroyed/we didn't have the natural resources on our planet to power any new tech they gave us and we were reliant on them to supply it.

ALIENS. PLEASE. DON'T MAKE CONTACT. KEEP YOURSELVES SAFE.

French, mate, "aliens" are incredibly unlikely to be as pictured by media

And they are even less likely to "invade" your home.

How do I know that film writers from the early 20th century had an intrinsic "knowledge" of what beings from outside Earth would look like?

I can't say for certain, hence I said 'incredibly unlikely to be...'

Who's to say the aliens will be able to survive in our atmosphere anyway.

Because, as far as we can see, the laws of nature are universal. They may be adapted otherwise, such as the bacteria that grow on sulphurous vents at the bottom of the sea, but so far in our case study of 1 we have to say that they would be oxygen-dependant.

So they're not invading this year i take it.

it's a bit of a stretch to believe that of the millions of species of 'life' that has evolved on this planet (99.9% of which are already extinct) that we are the only ones who developed this type of thoughtful conscious brain....
Do you not think the day will come when we CAN hear what the animals are thinking/saying.
And how long after that does everyone become a vegan after realising they really are not fackin happy with us.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps, but due to the ridiculous time-scales in question here... it's unlikely that we would ever overlap.

And

Hello, my flat-Earth buddy

The problem with all religious text is that the content and language within them is often so vague that it can be interpreted to whatever you wish. I'm sure you can easily find passages in the Bible, Quran or the Bhagavad Gita that could be used to justify the existence of extra terrestrial life.

Anyway, the scenario you provided is quite similar to what Scientologists believe.

Yeah, I know... that's why I don't like to think about things like that.

"but so far in our case study of 1 we have to say that they would be oxygen-dependant."

Too less data to pass as the norm or most likely outcome. It could have an adverse effect and kill them, which is why we haven't had contact yet.

This is where the science geeks needs to slow their role and see how much similarities they have to religion.

You then exit the realm of science (observation-backed theories) and enter philosophy... the two have completely different rules.

But its observations based on us

Where they have already confirmed that outside of our world a lot of things are different on other planets. So why would this E.T species be dependable on something similar to us when the enviroments are not the same.

As pointed out before, if advanced aliens life did land on our planet, they would most likely enslave us, exploit us or at worst, terminate us. As our own history has taught us, this is what occurs when stronger, technologically advanced civilisations come into contact with weaker, less technologically advanced civilisations.

However, I think it’s far more likely that we will discover alien life before alien life discovers us. Most alien life that exists in the universe is most likely very basic (various forms of bacteria).

Because we can only prove that life has developed as we observe it

You can speculate otherwise, but you cannot say it is "likely" for life to be able to exist in any other conditions but those that we know.

You can't...

In some form 'we' exist, yes. We can't be certain in what form though.

We can't even be certain that VC and Robb and/or you and Maf, for example, aren't part of one and the same entity...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We can be certain that we are in the form of atoms and their constituents, which all balance to a super-refined law that if adjusted even slightly would mean we wouldn't have! How many times could that happen? In an infinite multiverse, in theory, any number of times. In a single universe, nearly 0.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We can't be certain of that.

We could be entities of artificial intelligence living inside a simulated universe adhering to the laws we try to describe and understand.
