Martial's biggest weakness is his constant dropping behind the play to receive the ball to feet, rather than looking to play on the last line and get in behind.
I don't know whether that can be properly coached into him. If he could add that to his game he could be the better player because he's a bit more naturally gifted with the ball than Rashford.
I think the'd make a great strike partnership with the right midfield behind them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a challenge for you:
Name a current great strike partnership.
Name a current great strike partnership.
--------
dybala and higuain
They are both very talented young players. But even without the better attitude that he shows, I would choose Rashford. I think he has it in him to be a great, a legend for the club.
Ha!
Well, as you well know, we don't often see two strikers in a traditional partnership.
The one that I would consider great - and I appreciate that this one is often forgotten so may some strange - was Keane & Berbatov at Spurs a few year back. Those two dovetailed brilliantly and were a joy to watch.
Obviously that's not 'current', as we've seen a move away from 4-4-2 since then. I'm also not a avid watcher of continental football, so there may be some good partnerships in Europe that I'm simply not aware of.
One is the fact that this is his second season at the club and,due to his explosive season last year,is now a closely marked man.Perfect example would be against Liverpool where they had atleast 3 players closing him down relentlessly. But he's usually got atleast 1 opposition player keeping a keener eye on him this year.
He's getting less space and Martial is one player who works far better when there is space infront of him.
---------------------
This is true but it really doesn't help that whoever is playing at left back is instructed by Jose not to bomb forward. The reason he is allowed to be crowded out is because he has no one supporting him on the overlap.
The Liverpool game you mention was a perfect example. Whenever he got 1 on 1 with their young right back he had the beating of him. But they managed to outnumber him because Darmian barely got out of his own half.
Whoever has played on the left has struggled this season, and that's a big reason why. A lot is made of wingers helping out their full backs in defence. But for me it's just as important that the full backs help out the man in front of them going forward.
The most underrated partnership, though not in a traditional 2 uptop set up,would probably be Ronaldo-Benzema,for me atleast.
Last season i said Martial but Rashford has proven he has so much to his game this season. The two games against Celta showed he has much more in his locker than just a pacey goalscorer. Showed he can hit a free kick and pick out an excellent pass. Something Martial is yet to.
Also I don't think you can Jose for Martial's fork. He's given him plenty of opportunity and it's not Jose who keeps losing possession and over hitting crosses etc.
He's had a bad season but he'll come good.

I agree. A fit and in form Shaw would have made the left winger much better. Darmian can't attack and Blind isn't quick enough to overlap effectively.
Usually a partnership consists of a more creative deeper player and a finisher like the Dybala/Higuain one someone mentioned. We don't really have either in my opinion, both Martial and Rashford like to move wide and use their pace to attack space.
I do like strike partnerships, just not sure we have the players?
Our offensive threat from the FBs in nonexistent and a real problem. Tony has improved a lot this season defensively but whenever he moves the ball forward into the opponents half he does very little, especially when you see what other FBs can do.

CBJ and Riley.
Both have pace, good feet, love to get forward and overlap, and can deliver wicked crosses.
We have two exciting young players at our disposal who can play a (very) attacking left fullback role.
Rosso
Thing is though systems are continually changing and evolving as you know. If a manager can see that a strike partnership would work well against how most teams are currently set up then maybe it could come back. Juve are doing well with it so maybe others will look to that as inspiration?

Both just suffered from 2nd season syndrome imo. Rashford is coming out of that. While I agree Ibra hampered him slightly he has more appearances than any outfield player this season.
I don't think he's ready to lead the line all season yet and wouldn't have gotten close to 30 goals if he had.

CBJ looked decent last season but then couldn't get in a rubbish wolves side which says something.
Riley is still unproven.
What has rising through the French footballing system got to do with a player not being mentally weak? So with that logic any kid wh grows up in france and can have half a good season is mentally strong, irrelevant of any other issues that may effect a player?
There a numerous things that can effect that and new challenges will bring new obstacles for a player to overcome.
Process
While I don't rate CBJ that highly I don't think his loan spell at Wolves proves that much. Kane struggled with loans but that didn't prove much. Every player and loan move is different, often they don't work for a variety of reasons and I think CBJ was unfortunate with the manager being sacked not long after he moved.
Martial for sure. Rashford is nothing more than a finisher.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fair point.
I've come to accept the nonexistent attacks on the left had side from our fullbacks now. It's absolutely terrible, even more so when you see someone like Madrids Marcelo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree. A fit and in form Shaw would have made the left winger much better. Darmian can't attack and Blind isn't quick enough to overlap effectively.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Problem is though that they are actually told by the manager not to attack.
Jose's words after the Liverpool game:
"When you have Antonio Valencia playing as a right winger you cannot defend with two players, you need that third player to give some cover inside and to keep some balances, and he [Darmian] did that well."
That to me is a load of bollox, and it really isn't helping the balance of the team in attack
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I can partly understand it in games against better sides but I'd still love to see the full back bomb on with the DM dropping back maybe

CBJ and Riley.
Both have pace, good feet, love to get forward and overlap, and can deliver wicked crosses.
We have two exciting young players at our disposal who can play a (very) attacking left fullback role.

Thing is though systems are continually changing and evolving as you know. If a manager can see that a strike partnership would work well against how most teams are currently set up then maybe it could come back. Juve are doing well with it so maybe others will look to that as inspiration?

One poor season from a player who risen through the ranks of a richly talented French footballing system and all of a sudden he's mentally weak 😏
What's obvious is that both players form has suffered this season for whatever reason.
It does seem a pity that it's taken an acl injury to zlatan for rashford to suddenly come into his own again
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Both just suffered from 2nd season syndrome imo. Rashford is coming out of that. While I agree Ibra hampered him slightly he has more appearances than any outfield player this season.
I don't think he's ready to lead the line all season yet and wouldn't have gotten close to 30 goals if he had.

Carrick already more often than not drops in to fill out the back four when Valencia ventures forward.
