England will probably win this match by some 250 runs with a session and a half to spare. I get the idea of "dangling the carrot" if SA were capable of batting 4 sessions to save the match but in reality, they aren't.

Good to see some fight from Elgar and Bavuma to make England work for the win, although they could still collapse this morning.

Great to see Stokes pass 2000 runs. Hopefully the 100 wickets won't be too far behind as he just needs another 15. Interesting that he has the same number of centuries and 5 wicket hauls as Flintoff in less than half the number of matches. His bowling figures are really good for the last 18 months with 40 wickets at an average of 26.

What about the Aussies in the Ashes?

England have been great in this game. Doesn't mean much if England lose the next game. that happens to often.
For me to stat to praise England. I want England to win the next game and win the series 3-1.

Can Roland-Jones get the 2 wickets he needs to claim a 10 wicket haul? There surely can't be too many bowlers who have managed that on debut.

There's 9 bowlers who have taken a 5 wicket haul in each innings on their test debut, but that doesn't necessarily mean only those 9 have taken 10 wickets in total.

Cheers. Jason Krejza the last man to do it and he only played 2 matches. It's possible the same could happen to Roland-Jones if Woakes comes back in for the series against West Indies.

Not bad from England's 2nd choice spinner.

posted on 31/7/17

Always nice to see a spinner mop up the tail, especially as with a fair amount of play lost to rain, it wasn't a typical 5th day wicket.

It will be interesting to see how England approach the return of Ballance. I sense he would have played if fit so does he get his place back in the side and bat at 5 in place of Malan? Should England have used this game as an opportunity to give a youngster who they think has a future in test cricket an early taster? Dan Lawrence or Joe Clarke perhaps?

No way will Ballance get back in.. Sorry that he broke a finger.. But he shouldn't play for England again. Hes not got the technique

I'd tend to agree...we still haven't found another operner yet though...Jennings has potential, but needs to get a grip. Jason Roy is sketchy, I'd still favour both Butller & Bairstow playing personally, with Root opening...won't happen though

what did tell you

what was all the fuss about

england coasted to victory

elgar with great defiance for saffas but moeen ali with the hero finish

win the toss and bat first series.

posted on 31/7/17

I'm not against the idea of dropping Ballance for good but I think he's gonna get more chances to prove himself. I don't think we need a Buttler or Roy there as we have plenty of stroke makers in the middle order. We need a scrapper like Colly.

Bayliss doesn't even watch half of these players from one week to the next if reports are to be believed...
