Well yes of course, there needs to be a balance, there was a point in the 90s I think where pretty much every Surrey player was getting picked ahead of players with better averages.
I remember Vaughan never had the best domestic record, but they saw something in him and stuck with him. That worked out well and he ended up being world class (apart from his awful catching).
To be fair, I haven't seen Ballance bat in domestic cricket this season, but he seems to be getting out the same way he used to and doesn't look to have fixed the issues he had. Just my opinion.
Ballance hasn't changed his game at all really, he tried to change a bit last summer and it didn't work so he's just gone back to what he knows which has worked for him.
I think the selectors should take a bit more of a punt on a player though, I'd really like to see Westley come in at 3 as Ballance is injured. Stoneman seems to be the next in line but I think I'd like to see him come in for Jennings should Jennings continue to struggle to make runs.
Factaker.. for what its worth I think will win the series..
Michael Vaughan was never world class. he was a good batsman.. And had a good patch. but over all he wasn't world class at all
One of the only batsman I rated in the 2000s was Thorpe I thought he was class act..
Cook and Root especially the latter is world class..
I would stick with Jennings.. I think Australian wickets would suit him better. they are usually good for batting and the chance of being bowled is less likely. Thankfully there is no Johnson this time. he was deadly accurate and at the body iin the last series down under. and bowled 100mph..
Aussies now have a better pace bowling lineup now with Starc, Hazelwood and Cummins. Two guys who can clock late 90s mph and the other who is trying to become a Glen McGrath clone.
Doesnt matter about the pace..I think England struggle with the low 80s bowlers who bowl a good length. They struggled last time around because Johnson was so accurate at the body they had no place to go.. left armers when they bowl at you at 100mph its hard to cope with..
If you get over the new ball in Australia you have a massive chance of getting lots of runs.

I think the quality of bowling is a big factor here. When Vaughan first came into the side, Australia, SA, Pak and SL had much better bowling units than they have now.
When Cook made all those runs in Australia in 2010-11, compare that bowling line up to the 2002-03 series. Big difference.
Root looks World Class, Cook was World Class for a couple of years (like Vaughan), but not for his entire career as some suggest. Thorpe I agree was top notch.
Vaughan was a world class batsman until the captaincy took it's toll on him. He was averaging over 50 when he took on the captaincy and became the number 1 ranked batsman in the world. I know you can't read everything into the rankings but he was rightfully considered one of the world's best.
Starc if fit is just as good as Johnson if not better at hitting the wicket with an inswinger. If Jennings and Ballance play it will only end up one way.

How awful is the new cricinfo site. Completely ruined the site and looks like something a 6 year old would conjure. The mobile site is pretty horrendous already.

I took such a long time to finally get used to the previous site and now they've changed it again and made it even worse.

The mobile site has got worse than the horrendous version we had before this update. It's just full of adverts. People on Facebook have been hammering cricinfo for this horrendous piece of work.
I'm only using it because sky couldn't be arrsed to run theirs
failure for Jennings once again. no foot movement just pushed a little forward and knicked.

on this...I facking hate and can't understand why the beeb got rid of the in vision link.
Back to the game....
Malan... Strange selection or a good one?
"Jennings can't play. Ballance can't play"
That was Kevin Pietersen's assesment last week after claiming he only needs 5 mins to recognise whether a batsmen is good or not, and as much as i hate the arrogant tosspiece, jennings hasn't done much today to prove him wrong.
Thats quite a scacthin assessment for a couple of lads who are effectively his peers.
He's been unbearable since he was booted from the Eng set up.
Didn't see Jennings in India but what I've seen this summer nowhere near test standard. Not a lot out there in county cricket. Pick hameed before he's ready? Stoneman a player bayliss has not seen? Robson has he ironed out his technical flaws? Done the right thing packing the batting. If root and cook get big scores then bairstow and Ali can push on to a really big score at a fast scoring rate.
AS ALWAYS YOU GET THE FEELING IF ONE OF THE 2 IN GO THEN WE'LL FOLD.
Wow...what a ball and catch
