“ So Priti Patel is going to "reinterprete" (break) international maritime law 🤔”

Dread to think what that means. Can she do that?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They intend to turn the boats around and force them back to france... Not sure what that will mean for RNLI rescue boats
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I assume in U.K. territorial waters? I always thought maritime law was applicable to international waters and no one nation can change it to suit them. Admittedly know hardly anything about it
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a dead cat imo, they simply can't do it without breaking the law and the optics of causing a death through something like this wouldn't be survivable even for this lot

So if all they want is a distraction and a fight between "the left" and "the right" then I've fallen for it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I can't understand why the Border Force can't pick up the illegals the minute they leave French waters and take them back to Calais, why bring them here?

Apologies, I forgot you were filtered, so it was my fault I could not read your Current Events thread when I signed in.

I should not be allowed near tech.

I do not expect you or others to be balanced, but personally, being from NI perhaps, I like to walk in the other persons shoes sometimes, realising that accident of birth, parents, nationality, class, race, nature and nurture shape us, and if I was born in Palestine, Dublin or Kabul, I would be a different animal entirely.

I also see value in aspects of left and right, capitalism and social democracy, the family and social conservatism, patriotism and liberalism, tradition and progress.

Being dogmatic, entrenched and stuck in one mode of political or social thought, can lead to problems and angst, imo.

But I do admire passion and standing your ground too.

Welcome BH!

She mentioned socialist policies and one example of such is the minimum wage and more recently raising it which Jeff was all in favour for which I think by now we all know he was and it wasn’t for the betterment of the workers…
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks! I will reply properly later, as I think it's a point which deserves some looking at.

Just briefly though - if she is arguing that corporations and the filthy rich undermine the free market, then I absolutely agree! Many of which use the government to coerce workers and market competition, to protect profits.

If she is saying that these monopolies support socialism; then I think she is clearly mistaken or confused on what socialism actually is.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I think she was talking about policies. I don’t think that she think that corporations support community owned production, exchange etc
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fair enough, I did not watch the video as I cannot stand either of these people particularly.

My issue is mostly with the label of socialism, as I find Americans and some brits throw the term around at different things.

Theres a lot of interesting stuff to be said regarding monopolies - I would recommend Robert Nozick on this, as he is for me the best libertarian thinker I've come across.

In terms of Milton Friedman, he did say a lot of stuff. I am real big fan of his negative income tax; some areas he got wrong, but I'm certainly not of the mindset that he should be discarded.

Candace Owens and Russel Brand can be discarded though imo.

Also, I'm not sure whether increasing wages necessarily consolidates the market for big business. It might be said that one of the reasons that they keep their staff, is that they pay better salaries than their competitors/other sectors.

I guess you can say they can afford higher wages, whereas small businesses cant. but it seems to me that they already are able to out compete pretty much everyone.

Interesting footnote to the The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust being rebranded The Churchill Fellowship *story*

Both the Sun and the Mail talk of disgruntled volunteers objecting.

But the Trust/Fellowship says it has no volunteers

@ottoenglish

Will there be a retraction, will there be a correction?
Will there fk, gullible Brits love their media lies far too much.

Makes me laugh this. They’re only dropping his first name. Are people suddenly going to confuse The Churchill Fellowship with the dog who sells insurance?

Apparently there are no international waters between UK and France so the moment they leave French waters they've entered UK waters. From that point UK must comply with international law and they're no longer the concern of France.

HGV driving tests will be overhauled, meaning drivers will only need to take 1 test to drive both a rigid and articulated lorry, rather than having to take 2 separate tests (spaced 3 weeks apart). This will make around 20,000 more HGV driving tests available every year and mean drivers can gain their licence and enter the industry more quickly.

Tests will also be made shorter by removing the ‘reversing exercise’ element – and for vehicles with trailers, the ‘uncoupling and recoupling’ exercise – and having it tested separately by a third party. This part of the test is carried out off the road on a manoeuvring area and takes a significant amount of time. Testing such manoeuvres separately will free up examiner time, meaning they can carry out another full test every day.

Car drivers will no longer need to take another test to tow a trailer or caravan, allowing roughly 30,000 more HGV driving tests to be conducted every year.

This new legislation is changing previous EU regulations which the UK is no longer obliged to use.
