Rory Stewart is one of my least favourite politicians.
And this energy plan is unworkable and written for attention, like much of his commentary.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the national speed limit restrictions makes a great deal of sense, and I've always been in favour of free public transport for residents of specific cities. Seems to work well in many cities across Europe.
I'm obviously not a fan of taking more coal out of the ground though and we clearly need a fast-paced switch to renewables.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There you were - hoping for me to have a rare moment of open-mindedness
In all seriousness, completely cutting off Russian energy (40 per cent of coal, 40 per cent of gas, 30 per cent of oil) from the EU would require seismic behavioural changes and reduced consumption on a war-footing level most simply wont be prepared to consider.
These two blogs from Bruegel are excellent btw - one of which puts EUR100bn cost on maintaining such energy independence.
https://www.bruegel.org/2022/03/the-economic-policy-consequences-of-the-war/
https://www.bruegel.org/2022/02/preparing-for-the-first-winter-without-russian-gas/
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think Stewart's point was more in the context of British responses rather than co-ordinating with the EU.
Or do you think it would be pointless/futile for Britain to act without our European counterparts doing the same?
Or indeed is it simply a reaction to the idea of further government intervention on how we live our lives?
