Don't laugh, but boy in Belfast pub mentioned that and Finland last night, while I supped tea watching Hammers.

Is it nonsense?

I agree with what you said - NATO is a comfort blanket for countries further east.

Finland was invaded by the Soviet Union during WW2. Their invasion was quite shambolic, but ultimately they were able to take a sizeable region of the country.

My partners grandparents fought the Russians through the war, but were ultimately driven from their homes in Karelia. It's a really important region to Finnish culture and sadly is a bit crap due to Russian negligence.

russo-japanese war 1904-5

Humiliating and unexpected Russian defeat - led to the 1905 Russian revolution and October Manifesto which were both quenched but set stage for both 1917 revolutions

I never knew chemical weapons was such a sticking point - considering we went into Iraq on partially that basis and were criticised, but didn't invade Syria on that basis and were criticised.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
True, I remember seeing some stop the war activists moan about ousting Saddam, but not ousting Assad, while Aleppo burned, with Putin help.

Abbott, Independent Corbyn, McDonnell, Burgon etc recently signed a letter opposing NATO expansion east and western military intervention at a Stop the War meeting, in relation to the Ukraine war, as Jezza spoke at the Conway hall, and a guy waving a Ukrainian flag rushed in, only to be led away.

Starmer did get the Labour MPs to toe the line and bin this letter, but Corbyn and Claudia Webb as independents are beyond his reach now.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Whilst I disagree with the far left of the Labour party over this issue. I do worry regarding the over moralistic grandstanding of the Starmerite of the party.

There can be discussions over the role of NATO and the aggression of Russian in all this. Ultimately, the likely best solution will probably require some concessions from both Russia and Ukraine.

This is likely going to be resolved if the situation can be mediated in some way, which would require a less moralistic standpoint to the problem.

Any luck with your old tbbab account ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No bud, I did not try the old password, as got fed up fighting with it, but can if you wish tomorrow, after work.

Twelve odd Years ago I logged on with wife's email address and passwords changed, so I just used my own email and new password here this week.

Is that ok, bud...not breaking the rules?
.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nah, jus there is a stigma with high IDs I can flip the details between accountayif you like?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes bud, if you can.

The last one was in place for a decade or so, as I never used personal email account and did not want to use work email or computer.

I only set up a new email account recently, but now have it sorted and passwords recorded.

I can't see a way in which Russia can negotiate a settlement they can spin as a success which also sees sanctions lifted.

So, I do understand the fear that they will instead escalate conflict with devastating weapons

Oh I agree, and found myself agreeing with Corbyn and Abbott to a degree on NATO and the western interventions and willingness to go to war, but that led to Putin bot nonsense here😳

We should be able to query NATO, Western leaders and condemn Adolf Putin at the same time, and as you say, compromise and concessions await after war, between Ukraine and Moscow, whether we like it or not.

It is not right or morally acceptable, but that is geo politics and war.

Watched a few experts, MI6 and retired generals on TV, relate the Putin tale of catching rats where he grew up, until a rat bit him, after he cornered it.

You know where this goes...do not corner the rat as he will hit out, but how do you deal with or concede anything to a rat?

Reports show Mariupol flattened in parts with over 1500 dead civilians alone there, as Putin takes the south east, and this is moving west recently, plus of course around the north and Kyiv, with 2.5 million refugees after just two weeks.

Unsure about Putin on Kyiv, as it has not been brutally attacked, perhaps because it is central to Russian cradle of civilization, orthodox church and national identity, similar to Kosovo for Serbs, or maybe Russian troops are just stuck there and circling to create a seige?

Also saw Russian tanks destroyed with young men's body parts draped over and around tanks, so whatever happens, the world needs to find a political or military solution fast.

I was surprised that McDonnell and Abbott let the threat of losing the whip change their minds about attending the stop the war rally.

They must of worked out by now that Starmer is trying to purge the party of the proper lefties and although I'm not a fan of either I thought they had more minerals than that.

Obviously the fear of having to stand as independents at the next GE supercedes their principles.

good relations between Russians and Belarusians (people, don't care about governments) helps because they can think that Ukrainians are the odd one out of the three. However I never thought that forcing Ukraine into the union is a good idea and I think the best way for Ukraine would be dropping Crimea and Donbass in 2014 and joining EU but staying out of NATO.

Ukraine would be Finland 2.0 in this case.

Ukraine didn't let Donbass go and now we are in deep shiiit.
