I think it is a more interesting discussion to understand what aspects of the hostile immigration policy and how it was put into practice are supported or not, and why. I mentioned the dawn raids, the vans with the signs, the access to public services as 3 areas.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And how upset the cabinet are getting about people criticising their policies being applied to Ukrainian refugees now.

There's a lot of "but I thought this was what you wanted" about it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the difficulty the government has is that they are putting things and have put policies in place to limit the net figures and certainly the economic migrants and to undo that now for Ukrainians is going to leave ‘the door’ open for future refugees.

It’s not as simple as ‘let them all in’. No-one here wants Ukrainians to suffer but blanket changes are also not good for our country.

Personally, I would opt for sponsorship of other countries’ relief efforts, countries like Poland who will shoulder the biggest influx of refugees I would imagine.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Bizarre as to why some think the government should just cast existing laws aside on certain occasions but stick to them to the letter in others.

Brexit was a valid break from the claim mass immigration in exchange for propping up a inherently flawed economic system overly reliant on the services industry and cheap labour was a good idea.

Oil prices falling. Why do you think? This Iranian woman and the 400 million maybe parts of the puzzle. Shipments of Iranian oil coming to a refinery near you?

It’s also hard to decide which disasters we should think about doing things like that with.

It has been suggested that due to our country’s racist nature, we’ve been much more open & welcoming to Ukrainians coming here as opposed to darker skinned refugees such as Syrians for example.

The UK government could learn a thing or two from Ireland when it come to treating Ukrainian refugees.

PM Micheál Martin highlighting a humanitarian response "trumps anything" And that their "primary impulse is to assist those fleeing war."

Refugees are being offered access to benefits, plus healthcare, and have been afforded the right to work too.

TBH, i've NEVER seen this much energy and narrative changing of how people who are fleeing war are being perceived. People are opening their houses up, laws are being changed, no one is moaning about the strain on the system, they can get every benefit going, quick time...we're constantly being told that this means 'more' than other wars for various reasons etc..it's feels off-ish.

Precisely. I don’t remember this country opening up its borders to house Iraqi, Afghan or Syrians refugees.

One wonders if the website would crash like it did today if the offer was to house an Iraqi or Syrian refugee.

Why do you think there would be a difference?

Because they’re not white or European.

Maybe due to the 'uptake' being a little less, the system may work better.....maybe.

And it’s fair to say we played some part in the displacement of those Iraqis and Afghans.

I guess despite brexit there is still some notion of common feeling that we are part of Europe and share much with the Ukrainians as fellow Europeans that we wouldn’t necessarily share with Iraqis or Afghans.

It’s also easier to be compassionate when it isn’t “our boys” dropping them bombs. There’s not that conflicted feeling of “helping the other side” in the way it may have been for Afghans and Iraqis.

Interesting that it’s Iranians leading the asylum seeking for the last 6 years. I would’ve thought it would be Afghans or Syrians.

Russian casualties continue to mount, with roughly 6,000-8,000 Russian military fatalities thus far. To put that into perspective, there have been more Russian combat deaths in barely 2 weeks in Ukraine than U.S. combat deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq combined in two decades

Heard someone saying on the news that this is in a sense the first truly modern war where both sides are engaging with the latest weaponry

I find it hard to believe any of the numbers.
I hope the Ukrainians are kicking ass. But I don't know how they can count Russian casualties.

I’m worried it’s going the same way as the Iran and Iraq war did. Both sides just cancelling each other out, with no progress in sight and just casualties mounting up.

I genuinely have no idea if that is the case or not and inevitably you could only draw conclusions from someone’s take on it.

From what I’ve read the descending order is Russian military, civilians and then Ukrainian military.

Only from what I’ve read of course and I’m certain we’ll likely never know the true numbers.

If they keep targeting residential buildings and blocking evacuation routes/humanitarian supply lines I think there will be huge numbers of deaths for civilians coming

But aye, I've got no clue on real numbers or realistic hypotheticals
