I wish Starmer spoke about this supposed tax cuts. The government literally increased NI contributions and now have a slight cut and think the slight cut is worth celebrating.

I also with he had spoke a little about how much the government are making on the 57p they make for every £1 of fuel we put into our cars. The fuel increase is lining the pockets of government.

I also wish Starmer was stronger RE brexit. Let's admit irs a huge mistake.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Honestly, I hate how the gov get the blame for the price of fuel...

It's the fuel companies setting the bloody prices, and they are posting record high profits, if they dropped it to £1 a litre tomorrow the government's % would fall in line with it.

Did you see the 5p duty cut passed on a month ago? I didn't, it went straight in the pockets of the fuel companies shareholders.

Not often I'll go in to bat for the Tories, but this narrative really grips my shiiiiiit, theres one group of people responsible for the cost of living crisis and its shareholders, the demand for ever increasing dividends and share prices has created this toxicity, it's a profits crisis, it's facking Victorian, the 350 wealthies companies in this country are making 72% more than they did pre pandemic... But they need MORE
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The higher the price of fuel, the more of those 57p per £1 they make. Its crazy to think the government would not drop that 57p considerably without the need of it being up for debate on it being passed down.

I agree with you RE the fuel companies, but the government tare there for us. For you to not even suggest they should drop the tax on fuel is what annoys me. They make more money the more the price goes up,yet don't pass that on to us.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They tried it a month ago. It didn't affect the price at the pumps!

And no I don't think they should drop their share (I thought it was 49p?) Any tax cut needs funding elsewhere, we shouldn't be cutting taxes as the government haemorrhages money trying to buy off the next election.

What we need is a regulator to tie the PUMP PRICE to the BARRELL PRICE.

It's the same now as it was 10 years ago, it's ludicrous to suggest the government is somehow at fault here.

nobody is suggesting that the GVT is responsible for the price of fuel. But it should reduce the VAT they receive from motorists who buy it at the pumps at high prices and quit ripping us off in that respect.

And lose.

They really need to move back towards the centre and someone not sullied by this government.

Rory Stewart would win them elections but it may be a long shot. I think the party will have a hard job moving back towards the centre because of who they have elected.

Using “the mandate” in this context is a joke.

He’s isn’t the President of the United Kingdom. He’s the Prime Minister, chosen by his party; not by the people.

Constituency candidates don’t go to the public to campaign on behalf of the next potential Prime Minister of the country.

They're making out the 'mandate' was just delivering Brexit.

The referendum was done and dusted, many people in Northern Red Wall seats were more interested in levelling up which has turned out to be a hoax, a lie or just a pile of BS.

They aren't ripping us off, the fuel companies are, and they will just use the headroom the government create to increase profits, and guess what, your tax on other items will have to go up to compensate...

And then when the fuel price drops, what do you think will happen when they bump it back up to ensure no shortfall on the pre "crisis" price?

You may not like it but you'll let it ride as long as you're getting 50% of the profits.

How much do you think fuel prices will fall by?
They won't. This is the new normal. 1 time windfall tax won't change that.
Its like when I hear inflation will go back to normal by end of next year. It won't, but if it did the price increases we've already seen will still be in place. They just won't be rising as quickly.

And tying the pump price to the barrel price may work for a while, but refining costs and transport will suddenly rise at least on oil company books.

Well-placed source convinced Boris Johnson won’t quit, even if the 22 change the rules, and he loses a VONC.

Instead, he’ll claim he has a mandate from 14m voters, and will threaten to force an election - but not before deselecting everyone who voted against him.

@Mr_John_Oxley might have an insight. I thought the whole point of a parliamentary democracy is the PM is appointed by the Queen based on who can command parliament. If Tories vote for a new leader, Boris can "refuse" to go all he likes, but someone else will have that mandate
https://twitter.com/RMCunliffe/status/1544661266219892736?t=v2jxzaprGXwwmizpQ3xQiA&s=19

So basically he can do what he wants, it's still the head of state who decides who the PM is... If Bojo refuses that then we have a constitutional crises on our hands WHICH WOULD BE GREAT IN THE LONG RUN

Finally do away with the more out of date parts of our democracy and protect ourselves from lads like him who abuse the system

Yep, that would be amazing.

Pretty severe short term pain, I imagine. But it’d seriously enable parliamentary and electoral reform, and destroy the Tories.
