I'd happily work a 4 day week. My missus has been doing it for a few months and loves it she, she reckons she and her team get much more done.

Surely if they went in for a 5th day, and worked as hard as they did the previous 4 days, they would get even more done?!

It is silly. Loads of studies show that overworked people have reduced productivity. Most studies show that 4 day weeks increase productivity.
Applying the basic caveman logic of 'work harder extra days mean more work', discounts all the variables that makes up employee motivation and productivity.

Can only speak from personal experience but I find that if I have a day off from my 5 day week I achieve roughly 80% of what I would normally do. This being usually on the go the whole time, and I am far from a super human!
Certainly wasn't suggesting everyone should work a 7 day week like Crouch brought up, just the difference between 4 or 5 day. I appreciate there must be work out there where 4 is better than 5, just struggling to think what this may be.

I think I’d focus on shorter daily hours / longer & better break periods to allow staff to recharge properly.

Think we need more data.
"We don't have a firm handle on exactly what happened to productivity," says Juliet Schor from Boston College, which, alongside the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, was one of the academic institutions behind the trial. "But we do know that on a variety of other metrics, whether we're talking about revenue, [workforce] attrition, self-reports of productivity, employee well-being and costs, we had really good results."
While most of the companies taking part said they were happy with productivity and performance outcomes, only 23 provided financial data covering revenues, and that showed revenue had broadly stayed the same over the six months of the trial.
But of the 61 companies that took part, 56 said they would continue with the four-day week, at least for now, of whom 18 said the policy was a permanent change.

The point is they haven't given up a days pay, it's a way of making automation work for the workforce too.
More leisure time leads to a host of benefits, mental health for the workers from a better work/life balance and more time to enjoy hobbies leads to better physical health too from one less day spent sedentary in an office.
In other trials It's also been shown to help reduce social care burdens as people have more time to spend with and help older loved ones.
It's all wins as long as productivity stays the same and as 56/61 trialists are keeping the system you would imagine that it has.
I would also guess that those 56 companies are probably going to have their pick of employees going forward as the 20% higher equivalent wage will probably motivate the best and brightest to apply for jobs there.

No way bro. Don’t be so silly
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is silly. Loads of studies show that overworked people have reduced productivity. Most studies show that 4 day weeks increase productivity.
Applying the basic caveman logic of 'work harder extra days mean more work', discounts all the variables that makes up employee motivation and productivity.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not no just that but it kills two birds with one stone.
More productivity just means more money for your employer. A 4 day work week improves productivity for your employer while at the same time allowing employees to improve their mental health and spend time with lived ones.
Win-Win.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A change in work practice over a reduced salary rise, I'd consider that.

Have they got the results from the trial we did last year?

I think I’d focus on shorter daily hours / longer & better break periods to allow staff to recharge properly.
As always these things are sector-dependent.

"But of the 61 companies that took part, 56 said they would continue with the four-day week, at least for now, while 18 said the policy was a permanent change."
I'd happily work a 4 day week. My missus has been doing it for a few months and loves it she, she reckons she and her team get much more done.

Surely if they went in for a 5th day, and worked as hard as they did the previous 4 days, they would get even more done?!

Thanks for the one sensible response
Can only speak from personal experience but I find that if I have a day off from my 5 day week I achieve roughly 80% of what I would normally do. This being usually on the go the whole time, and I am far from a super human!
Certainly wasn't suggesting everyone should work a 7 day week like Crouch brought up, just the difference between 4 or 5 day. I appreciate there must be work out there where 4 is better than 5, just struggling to think what this may be.
I guess I'm very lucky too given how much I enjoy my work!

I would love a 4 day week and would happily give up a days pay. When you’re on the high tax band over here it would result in a minor reduction to net pay

That makes it alright then, she’s completely eliminated herself from the race with those comments anyway. A homophobe would never get into power up there. In England? Well she’d be welcome in the Tory party with those views.

Yeah she has probably but least she's honest with her beliefs so everyone knows where she stands on these issues. I don't agree with her at all mind you
