Why must it be and/or?
Perhaps public opinion would shift if the UK and US Governments were supportive of Russia and were continually labelling all Ukrainians as terrorists.

Same reason why the BLM protests were so popular. Such causes provide a way for knowledgable white middle class people to demonstrate how educated they are on instagram and provides better social and career opportunities.
