The ubiquity of guns in America does make the prospect of policing there as a job rather unattractive to me
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh absolutely. There are some incident of pure evil, malice, incompetence et cetera. But we have to remember the environment in which they operate over there.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
My point is more imagine some of the nutters that job attracts with that level of danger
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A fair point too. I’m pretty sure the limited training is the biggest issue. Some states train their officers for such a short time and never again.

We do need to focus on society also though. As much as the police need more training, society needs to learn how to behave with the police. There will still be exceptions of course but incident like the last the other week could do with being lessons to teach the public rather than gathering around the notion of ‘defunding the police’ or ‘kill the bill’.

There should be similar outcry for people to comply more. At the point of being dealt with by the police, kicking up a fuss, disobeying, fighting back is only going to harm you, not help. Film / record / witness what you can and deal with any injustice afterwards.

Just because you are the dominant brand at a given time doesnt mean you get to rewrite the fundamentals of baking

I don’t like Voter ID, it is an authoritarian concept to solve a tiny problem, the equivalent of chucking acid on your face to remove a pimple.

I dislike ID in general, and CCTV, and the vast majority of measures made to put the onus of proof on the citizen and not the state.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Smart phones already accomplished all that you dislike or fear.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dumb argument. One is a voluntary arrangement, the other is state mandated.

Secondly, we already criticise and are looking to challenge much of how smart phone technology operates and we are already seeing Apple reform towards being a pro privacy platform.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Could say it’s dumb to be worried about surveillance whilst voluntarily having the most advanced form of surveillance on your person at most times.

I think the issue with smart phones is a lot of the surveillance is hidden knowledge from the owner so it isnt in fact fully voluntary

Can migrants who come to the US illegally vote? Can those who come legally vote?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They can’t legally vote, no.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok so to be clear the approach from Biden is pandering to left democratic voters so that they don’t stay away from the presidential polls in 3.5 years time? If that is the rationale behind his approach I’m not sure that it’s an optimal political strategy
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They can vote illegally. No idea how to answer your question to TBAB. The criteria to vote is obviously quite lacking in some form.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Highlights

First use of representative sample to measure non-citizen voting in USA.

Some non-citizens cast votes in U.S. elections despite legal bans.

Non-citizens favor Democratic candidates over Republican candidates.

Non-citizen voting likely changed 2008 outcomes including Electoral College votes and the composition of Congress.

Voter photo-identification rules have limited effect on non-citizen participation.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hahaha fair enough 😂
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Someone should edit Wikipedia and their citations 😂😂
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It seems the main issue is the maths behind it rather than the overall content. Trump used it to claim fraud wrt to the popular vote but the ‘correct’ numbers were lower than Trump indicated.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So we don't know the correct number. Maybe people should be more worried about the barriers to voting Republican states are putting up to stop actual citizens from voting. Not worth it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sure. If I were a US citizen I would want their whole system sorted.

Not really looked into it in the UK but I’ll assume that we have nowhere near the issues with voting. Whatever we do, just do it over there?
Although I guess over there it might be discriminatory? I don’t know.

It sounds like that chap’s research equates to around 835,000 votes which is still quite a lot to be fair but wasn’t enough to overturn the popular vote as Trump claimed. The guy was just embarrassed by his study being erroneously used by Trump.

I don’t really lose all that much sleep over it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was a survey. Nobody would lie on an anonymous survey, or would they?

Rather ridiculous for a free marketeer to conflate a transaction and agreement with a private company for a product with the state surveilling you. I
