Griff a swift search of Stoke’s attendance’s prior to their promotion shows it was 16000. At first I though it was because they hadn’t moved to the Britannia Stadium but it wasn’t. They moved there in 97 and as I said those average attendance prior to promotion were 16000. When you consider capacity is 30000 it must have been a poor atmosphere. Move onto promotion and in the prem they average 27000. Still not capacity but it shows they have 10000 glory hunters.
Their academy and facilities pale into insignificance compared to ours.
In every way other than league position, which is temporary, I agree with Peeder that we are a bigger club than Stoke.
Even Forest are a bigger club than Stoke.
Not sure GT is the preferred option think we can mix n match. Ledley scares the opposition his constant ratting you can see opposition MF’s not wanting to play near him. Nothing comes through the centre with Deadly just out to the wings where our wingers double up with our full backs n we cancel teams out. GT offers us a ton more creatively but conversely the defensive shield lets down it’s guard a lot more.
Thinking it might depend on GR’s strategic career plan whether he opts for Stoke or not, there might be a better offer than Stoke in the offing n that might be what sways it.
Agree with Vidals though the Mel factor might play a part here. Stoke have a proven record in giving their managers time.
But the made point that out trumps all those points is the fact they haven’t helped Derby in the last 10 seasons while stoke have been in a higher league spending more money because they have more money. If it had only been 1 or 2 years then yes it’s not even up for discussion but it’s 10 years. Those 10 yeas will increase if GR goes there. He could name his bonus to keep them up.
I don’t deny Rowett will go there but it will be because they are premier league and as a result is a step up in his career. Not because they are a bigger club. He won’t wait and see if we get promoted because we could lose form and he may not get the opportunity again.
Career progression for an English manager representsa job at a club like Stoke. Top 6 clubs don’t want to know so for Rowett this could be a career goal. If he does well England could come calling.
If it was me I would go.
Here’s a question.
Stoke appoint a manager say MO’N and he keeps them up. GR stays at Derby and get them up.
So Derby and stoke are both in the prem.
who would be tipped to finish higher next season?
Who would have the biggest transfer kitty?
Who’d have the biggest turnover?
Stoke have smaller crowds, just, but they have a bigger gate receipts
Premier league club for the last 10 years,
No need to move house,
Bigger wages,
Massive bonus for keeping them up,
A chairman who gives his manager time
I’d go!
I just hope we slump and miss out on the playoffs to bring GR’s stock down
At this time this is the right place for Gary, we know it and he knows it. I’m sure he said so just last week.

I think a lot of clubs have 10k plus glory hunters. Look at Birmingham's attendance of 7,800 yesterday. A disgrace, yet there will be over 25k there on Saturday just to see the Derby.

MM will surely offer a huge bonus for getting promotion. And IMHO he has a better chance of getting promotion with Derby than he does of keeping Stoke in the PL. And he finishes up where I suppose he wants to be - the PL rather than going down to the Championship with Stoke. No! - if he wants PL football - Derby are his best bet. I wouldn't go.
What is more - his stock as a manager will be much higher because of his loyalty and his stickability.
Of course, GR's humble opinion on this topic is much more potent than mine. I wonder what he believes about promotion with Derby versus survival with Stoke.
And of course - MM's reputation versus Peter Coates on firing.
The whole thing about firing managers is misleading anyway.
3R makes a good point - some chairmen sack quicker than others.
So, what does that mean?
It might mean, for example, that the chairman who sacks quickly has greater aspirations than the manager either has or is capable of achieving.
That is why we got rid of Nigel - he wasn't doing a bad job but it wasn't moving as fast as the owners wanted.
Owners who keep managers in place are generally those who are happy with mediocrity.
This certainly seems to be the case with Stoke. They are a smallish club with no obvious aspirations of anything other than maintaining their Premiership status/income.
Peter Coates has invested into the club at a level which he feels will keep them safe but nothing more and his management dealings have reflected that.
Would this fit in with GRs personal aspirations?
Keeping them up would be a tick on his CV but getting a club promoted would be a bigger tick.
Personally, I don't think GR wants to be the next Big Sam style rescue expert.
Good points Peeder but let's say that in addition to keeping them up he got them established in the top ten in the next couple of years. That might be a step to further his career. A jump to a top four club probably wouldn't be achievable at that stage but it might put him in line for, say, an Everton or similar size club.
The risk with going to Stoke would be that he failed to keep them up this season and then his career will have gone backwards. The risk of staying at Derby is that he fails to get us up and misses what might be his only chance to get a Premiership job. Assuming Stoke do indeed want him it depends on how he sees it. That's just the objective view. It's possible that so-called loyalty might come into it or desire to see a job through. We can't read his mind. We will know in the next day or two presumably.
Just before Rowett was made Derby manager I posted on here that my I had had a piece of inside information that he had been given the job. Some might remember it. The same source has just told me that Rowett is keen on the Stoke job if offered it.Take it with a pinch of salt, just passing it on.
Owen Bradley just tweeted he doesn’t believe Gary Rowett has any interest in the Stoke job .
Hope he's right
Whatever happens, and I sincerely hope that it's nothing at all, we need for DCFC to be decisive around this and not repeat the Schtevie/Toon shenanigans which de-railed us entirely.
This all seems to have blown up the instant Heb took over as PoTY. Just saying.
I never thought he would. Had it been an established Premier league team I would have been more worried but Stoke are at best a yoyo team and their yoyo tends to be with the string long. They have just had a decent stay but it wasn't as long as Wigan's or Sunderland's and look at them now.
Surely someone from a media outlet must have rung him to ask the question by now.
No news is bad news in this case.
Why is he keeping quiet?

Clubs often won't respond to what is, as far as we know, media speculation only.
If Stoke enquire and either Mel, Gary, or both, decline the opportunity then I'd expect an announcement to that effect. On the other hand, there'd be no harm or disrespect to Stoke if Rowett released a statement that didn't mentioned directly but affirmed his commitment to the task in hand, but who'd believe that anyway?
Of course, had Keogh defended properly and we'd beaten Man U then Rowett would be going nowhere so I think we all know where to direct our ire...
I am preparing an article, hopefully will be ready by Summer. In the meantime, a comment ...

Point 5 is probably the most relevant .... do we even KNOW that the Stokies want him?
No we don't Fin. What will be happening, or more likely what will already have happened over the weekend, is a bit of informal sounding-out of those managers Stoke have on their wishlist. News of this tends to get out and it is impossible to believe that Rowett is not one of those. It doesn't mean he is necessarily first choice. The longer Rowett keeps quiet the more likely it is that he is at least either interested or else using it as a lever to get a pay rise. The person I know does not make things up and so I have no doubt that Rowett is at the very least open to the prospect. But he is not going to burn his bridges at Derby unless he is the preferred candidate. Even then it would need a formal approach and after that it would be up to Mel whether he takes the same line as Watford recently and resist it all.
Rowett could end it all instantly if he wanted to, with a simple statement.
