What I meant when I said about shltting on the original doesn't mean that it will change peoples' minds about it as an individual movie. I mean that it throws unnecessary shade on it. The world shown to us in Gladiator didn't need revisiting, it was a near perfect movie that was fully concluded by the end and should have been left well alone.

If Gladiator 2 is awful then it detracts from the legacy of the first movie (not the movie itself) as it's now forever associated with a terrible movie whether it wants to be or not. It doesn't mean that people think any less of Gladiator 1 itself but that completely unnecessary association with a terrible movie would always be there.

Fairly simple point really.

I mean off the top of my head: The Exorcist, Jaws, Chinatown, Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Grease, Speed, Jurassic Park, Blair Witch Project and Donnie Darko all have really bad sequels but no one thinks they detract from the first movie.

Star Wars famously has underwhelming sequels and people still regularly cite the original trilogy as the best trilogy of all time etc etc

Yeah some fair points. I quite liked Jaws 2 in truth, think it carries on the story well enough from the first movie even if it's essentially just a total repeat of the first one. Grease 2 and Speed 2 were so bad they almost got forgotten about straight away though which can only be a good thing.

I've suggested a theme of good movies that didn't need a sequel but got one for the Thursday Theme on the movies thread if anyone interested. Think there's about five of us on the entire site at the moment though lol.

Star Wars: A New Hope definitely needed a sequel/sequels. Would have been weird if it all just ended at that medals ceremony at the end of the movie and we don't get to find out if Han, Luke, Leia and the Rebellion fully beat the Empire in future movies 🤔

What I liked about the first movie was it opened & closed with him speaking to a psychiatrist(I think?) and there were subtle differences in both the scenes hinting that everything could've all just happened in his head...which fit the whole tone of mental health issues in the movie. There were hints throughout the movie about what was actually real and what was imagined by Arthur.

A sequel actually obliterates all of that though so what do I know

But to then shift to a musical...fack knows what they were thinking.
