Just need 19 more from Root now. Afternoon session could be a lot of fun...!

Just a case of how many really. Lead is currently 271. If we can get that up to 400 in the afternoon session that would be excellent.

Agreed. Can't remember the last time we actually laid a proper platform for the middle order to have a whack!

Bairstow would probably have another tantrum though

Cook clearly has plenty of gas left in his tank.

Psychological though isn't it? Series is won, no more speculation, has nothing to lose etc. no pressure on him whatsoever.

Still think all he needs is a winter off though.

Genuinely gutted we won't be seeing him in an England shirt again. He has opened the batting for the majority of my cricket watching life, will be so strange watch us without him.

I do wonder if conditions were more like the Oval throughout the series and he got runs if he would have gone another year for the Ashes. He's still clearly our best opener.

T20 mode, get lead towards 400 and allow 4 sessions to bowl these out.

This. Even more so when we don't have a single opener set in stone now.

T20 mode for 30 overs would be like another 240 runs. I think Bairstow coming out next makes sense as he is used to batting aggressively in test matches. Controlled aggression is all we need, 5 an over should give us plenty and also not allow them to stall momentum by taking wickets.

Yeah I do wonder if he was in top form this summer he would have made this decision.

yeah I think he would have benefited from that quite a bit, I mean non stop test cricket for 12 years im guessing will be pretty gruelling, look at abd retiring pretty young as well, he's still youngish so who knows in 3/4 years time when eng have tried another 50 openers he doesn't come back

Just realised Cook has overtaken Kumar Sangakarra to become the highest run scorer in Tests for a left hander.

Steady Joe. Just tap a few singles to reach your hundred then look to go after the bowling again.

the way he plays requires a lot of mental strength and concentration. i can imagine he's had enough of this and mixed with his current form, probably made up his mind.

Time to kick it up a gear now. Onus has to be on Root to do so, Cook will just want to keep batting.
