Well I thought we did OK at the World Cup. Croatia are a very good team and had a bit of luck gone their way they might have won the whole thing. Had Kane taken his chance we would have reached the final. There were plenty of positives. We lack creativity in midfield and a viable alternative to Kane. We always denigrate countries that we beat but both Sweden and Colombia are decent teams. Croatia struggled harder to beat lesser teams than those two on their way to the semi-final. The style of play was much better and holds out hope for the future. There are a lot of good young players around like Mason Mount and many of the existing squad should improve. I didn’t rate Southgate at all but I have to say he has done far better than I expected. The test now will be to build on the Workd Cup and get to the point where we regularly challenge in major tournaments. I don’t really get the need to continually criticise the national team, maybe it’s more to do with people not feeling all that patriotic and preferring club to country. There are plenty of things in England and in Britain to feel ashamed about but the footy team isn’t one of them at the moment.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I might not have felt ashamed Vidal but I didn't exactly feel all that proud either. Southgate's team was very much like a Tony Pulis team. I really didn't rate any of our central defenders even though they were our most effective attackers, and the midfielders weren't particularly creative. I am certain Southgate can coach the creativity out of Mason Mount. Getting to the semi-finals did flatter us, we are not one of the best four international teams on the planet.

If that’s the case then Southgate over-achieved with what he’s got, and that’s got to be a positive. It isn’t his fault that there aren’t more creative midfielders around. I can’t agree with the Pulis comparison except for the attention to set pieces. There was a definite intent to play from the back including the keeper.

It’s easy to carp about anything if you have a mind to. You could say that Derby have scraped two lucky late winners, that we haven’t dominated poor teams and that we don’t deserve to be anywhere near the top six, but I see a lot to be optimistic about. Maybe I’m that way inclined. There does seem to be an ingrained negativity for some fans about the England team and I’m sure it’s at least partly to do with a lack of connection and a rejection of the notion of national pride.

Southgate didn’t overachieve Vidal. Don’t be confused with reaching the World Cup semi final in the 2018 competition as a mark of success.
We beat Columbia Sweden Panama and Tunisia to achieve that position. Not an overachievement at all for England.
In the cold light of day away from the hype when it comes down to it we weren’t really that good.

“The cheapest sort of pride is national pride; for if a man is proud of his own nation, it argues that he has no qualities of his own of which he can be proud; otherwise he would not have recourse to those which he shares with so many millions of his fellowmen. The man who is endowed with important personal qualities will be only too ready to see clearly in what respects his own nation falls short, since their failings will be constantly before his eyes. But every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud adopts, as a last resource, pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and glad to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

I have some sympathy with your mate’s opinion, Spart, but this is just footy, and as long as we remember that I don’t see the harm.

Rameses, no, we weren’t “that good” but there were encouraging aspects to the tournament for England. We did better than Germany, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, etc. Why not at least enjoy that a tiny bit? It doesn’t happen very often. When we beat Forest we are pretty happy, we don’t say it doesn’t count because they are crap, even though they invariably are.

England getting to the semi final against the team's they played is equivalent to a team like everyone getting to an fa cup semi final by beating a league 1 team, a decent championship team, and a couple of fair to middling premier league teams. Then losing in the semi final to leicester. Not that big a deal, not that huge an achievement. Fergie winning the premier league in his final season with that godawful utd side was an achievement.

Everton not everyone. Stupid phone thinking it knows better than me what I want to type.

Millwall made it to the FA cup final a few seasons back due to the luck of the draw. I don't think many Millwall supporters thought they would be nailed on for promotion the following season.

England aren't a bad side but have too many weaknesses to be anything other than ranked around 8 to 10.

Vidal I suppose my predominant feeling is the lauding of failure.
The hype was huge. these pampered players cast as the little underdog hero’s not expected to do well. And that would have been the case if the counties you mentioned brought their A game.
We could of happily gone out to Germany in the quarter’s on penalties and look to our young team and say it’s good ground work for next time.
But when it turned out that we had a real shot to win it and we blew it.
Yet they still get lauded.

I’ve waited long enough for us to win it. I would have died for the cause. But I didn’t see that at all from our team.

I couldn't have cared less. Genuinely. To the point where the semi final was a 6am kick off here, and my boss said I could come in late if I wanted to stay home and watch it, so I sat there having my morning coffee in bed watching it, they scored and I realised I didn't care, it got to half time and I decided i would rather go to work. Contrast that with my reaction when derby scored the winner against reading and I jumped out of bed shouting my joy. It's as you were for me since approximately 2010, if it ain't derby county, I don't care.

Before I moved to the US last year I extensively travelled Europe watching England and win draw or lose I always enjoyed it. The team invariably let the traveling fans down but I am English and I will always support the England team. Derby are my real passion and I've visited most grounds following Derby since the early 1970's and during the mid 80's Derby were dog poo to watch but they were and always be my team.

I think the main acheivement in the summer was to get the English public behind the team again with the way the players and management conducted themselves plus some half decent performances. The first half against Tunisia was in my opinion the best half played by any team in the entire tournament and we never quite hit those heights again.

Evidently, they didn't quite reconnect with everybody but as Vidal pointed out, you could level the charge about the quality of opposition against Derby this season so far.

Non football related but the tour of British is passing the camp gates in about an hour and a half before going up the Burton Dassett climb about a mile distant.
I'll be going up the hill to watch it in a minute or two and I'll be flying my REME corps flag for good measure. Hopefully the cameras will pick it up. So if anyone is watching have a look for a 6ft, 18 stone lump with grey hair and loud shorts furiously flag waving.
It's due through between 1430 and 3pm.

Now we have a true Derby fan in the wilds of Kentucky. I was there once and enjoyed the Shaker museum. Built of stone and surrounded by dry stone walling that looked just like Derbyshire. I asked an official where the lady came from who started the Shaker movement. He said somewhere south of Manchester i e Derbyshire. They made really beautiful furniture and tools etc. They lived in limestone houses very reminiscent of Derbyshire stone houses. They went out of existence because they banned sexual congress and relied only on orphans to make up the numbers.

Keep up the support Rameses. I will always try to file a report for just such as you and Harper. Oh and 666 who never goes to games though he lives within 6 miles or so of PP.
