Just one of my friends at work said he would prefer being world number 1 over winning the world championship which I thought was odd but there you go.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I suppose being world number one means you’ve been consistently good during a certain period.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
na world number one is a pile of $hit, colin lloyd use to be the #1 in darts for like 5-6 years and was one of the worst players i've ever seen and always use to bottle it on the big stage, was just because of the smaller tournaments, bit like Selby, bar the world championship he's only really won the odd big tournament, just cleans up the crap smaller chinese tournaments and lower ones

Don't find #1 impressive at all, i remember Bingham for being a world champion, don't even care who #1 is, even before Ronnie got #1 (think he's lost it now?) we know who is #1 anyway or the best when on it

#1 means nothing really in tennis, snooker or darts for me

Aye, only the three World Championships, three Masters and two UK Championships for Selby.

posted on 4/5/19

(And yes I know the Masters is non-ranking, but I'm just pointing out the utter pash that Selby only wins the wee tournaments).

What a match, get in there John.

Make it third time lucky

Exactly, that's not really a lot for someone that was world one for like 6 out of the last 8 years, he doesn't win many major tournaments

posted on 4/5/19

since 2012 he's won 3 world championships granted, but he's only won a uk open as another tournament of any note

posted on 4/5/19

Missed majority of the last frame unfortunately. Finished work at 6. Battery on phone was 5% Shame Gilbert lost but fair play to him getting to the semis. John Higgins proving people wrong and has still got it. Hope Judd can do the business this evening. He has an old score to settle with John Higgins!

grand prix, champion of champions, masters, uk championships, english open etc

doesn't really win many of these or hasn't for a long time, just wins a lot of stuff like german open or china tournaments

And this ain’t darts!

You have to be regularly winning or running up in ranking events to get world number 1in this.

think Shaun Murphy even has a better tournament haul than Selby in the last 5-6 years, Murphy, Robertson, Sullivan, Trump all have better. So for the supposed world #1 / ex #1 for as long as he was i think all 4 of them are better than him and have been better than him, excluding the world championship. World championship wins which is a great achievement fair enough but that does enhance Selby for better than he is

posted on 4/5/19

I was comparing it to Darts in terms of Colin Lloyd like Selby was world #1 but never really won anything major while world #1 he just lived off the smaller ranking tournaments, like Selby does excluding the world championship.

I'm saying outside the world championships in recent times in last decade he's won fack all and is not a truly elite player

Don't think Trump is either yet, 1 world championship final in the last 10 years is shocking (obviously about to be 2 tonight)

posted on 4/5/19

What exactly do you class as a "truly elite player", if not someone who has won the three most prestigious events eight times in total?
On the current circuit, how many others come close to that?

Folk have this bizarre irrational hatred of Selby and always try to downplay his achievements. Don't get it at all.

Easy win for trump tonight as expected
