I don't think Roy will be a great success at test match level but he has to play due to lack of options. Yesterday gave a glimpse into how much more difficult it is when it swings.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
100% but simply who else is there, no one that has been cemented at international level that's for sure. The middle order really need a strong series for England to come out on top, as a test side England are liable

Sibley will come into the side I reckon. Has been doing very well all season and is doing well for the Lions. Roy may well bat at 3 but could well stick with Denley for now. Expect Burns to retain his place for now.
Lots of bowling options and honestly don't know how we'll go. Woakes may well get the nod with it being at Edgbaston with Broad and Anderson but could see anyone from Wood, Curran and Archer included instead of any of the above (if Anderson isn't fit).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Moeen, dispite form, has a good record at 7 and is reliable on English pitches with the ball where it doesnt do a lot as he doesnt anyway.
Woakes, archer, broad, Anderson as seamers.
Curran for Anderson if hes not fit and wood or archer I dont mind.
Team picks its self really imo other than the openers.

I honestly don't see why anyone outside Australia would support the ball tamperers
Australia are probably the most annoying team to watch and support. How on earth does smith still score 100s with that technique is probably the biggest cricketing mystery. Hoping this 1 year gap has enabled bowlers to get him out quickly 😂😂😂
Aus play like warriors, do not give up till last ball regardless of any situation. 5-0 Aus in Ashes.

Moeen has pretty decent figures at home and will probably play as none of him, Leach and Rashid are in a class of their own on the international stage.
I'd be surprised if we picked 4 seamers, a spinner and Stokes, especially with so many question marks around our top 3. We'll be packing our batting which is why Moeen will probably play at 8 with Woakes at 9.
going to first day of the first test. first test match, very excited
going for 3-1 eng, team will be on a great high from the wc, englands bowlers will be the key, they will be able to do more with the ball and the aussie batsmen wont be able to handle it
predicting
2 big eng wins
1 tight eng win
1 tight aussie win
1 rain out draw because its summer in England
I think it might be a little tighter.
2-1 to us.
Our batting order still concerns me a little

Personally I actually would go with 4 seamers because I think over the past 18 months Stokes has shown a more mature batting style that could be the solution to our number 3 problems. 4 other seamers would then reduce his workload with the ball to enable him to play that position.
Probably won't happen and could backfire spectacularly but it's something I'd like to see tried.
I'd go: Sibley, Burns, Stokes, Root, Bairstow, Foakes (wk), Ali, Woakes, Broad, Archer, Jimmy
I'd go: Sibley, Burns, Stokes, Root, Bairstow, Foakes (wk), Ali, Woakes, Broad, Archer, Jimmy
agree about bowlers 7-11, but that opening partnership is a concern and where's Buttler?
Buttler will be a certainty for sure but Foakes is a class player who was prematurely dropped in my view.
The opening partnership is a concern but that will be the case regardless of who is selected. It won't be long before they turn to Roy but you feel like it's Sibley vs Crawley to partner Burns for the first test match.

Yeah it's a bit harsh on Buttler but I feel Foakes will be the better test batsman and he's the best gloveman in the country by miles.
Looks like Sibley is unlikely to play now given Roy's been called up for the Ireland game and he hasn't.

Yeah I agree.
Based on the Ireland squad it looks like 1-7 for the first test is likely to be:
Burns, Roy, Denly, Root, Stokes, Buttler, Bairstow, unless they persist with Bairstow at 3 and exclude Denly.
Middlesex have massive support...all pubs are all full after T20
Australia's Ashes squad
Tim Paine (capt), Cameron Bancroft, Pat Cummins, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade (wk), David Warner.

England squad for first Ashes Test:
Joe Root (capt), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes.
