So that's 3 of the last 4 PM's who have (at least initially) got the job because of <0.5% of the country.
Don't you just love democracy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Our democracy elects the governing party, not the leader of said party.
Why can't people comprehend this?
If you want to elect absolute rulers/presidents with supreme authority then campaign for reform.
We are one of the premier democracies in the world. The fact that people question our democracy at every opportunity when something they don't agree with happens is enough to make Arab ill....
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I do comprehend, I just think it's a poor showing of the state of affairs in this country that the PM is being repeatedly chosen by so few people.
Plus let's be honest, whoever the leader is will invariably affect certain people's votes in the general election regardless of party manifesto.
comment by Red Russian (U4715)
I read an article that made a decent argument that the democratisation of elections to the leadership of the Tory and Labour parties is actually bad for democracy. Essentially, it means that fringe views (i.e. members of political parties tend to be more extreme than members of the public) can capture the agenda of the governing parties. By contrast, the MPs (who used to select their leaders) have to represent their constituents, i.e. have to choose someone who can appeal to enough people to get them elected.
Combine this with a disproportionate electoral system that makes it very hard for smaller parties to challenge the big two, and it's a recipe for polarisation and for demagogues to control the agenda.
...combine this with the broader cultural-technological-social disruptions of our era and we're down the creek without a paddle.

I've always thought this but never been able to express it well. Very good point.

There’s a huge chance Boris loses his seat if a GE comes about as well, his Uxbridge seat was retained by the skin of his teeth in 2017 and the polls show he’s further declined in popularity there as well since then.
Another huge opportunity for the Lib Dem’s to make steps there too.
