Stokes cleans up the tail with the pressure on. Took 6 catches. Scored a useful 47 in the first innings with a blistering 72 in the second to put SA's chances of a potential win to bed. Has to be man of the match although Sibley had a fantastic match as did Anderson.

Stokes again, and Sandy said he shouldn't have been Spoty
Well done Stokes, again performing when it matters
Philander last to go, that's perfect
He deserved to lose after checking out of their bowling effort once England were on top.
First time we’ve batted well and we absolutely clean them up, same again next test and let’s finish em off.

LiverpoolWhoElse is the same. There seems to be a surprising amount of people who don't rate or probably more accurately simply don't like Ben Stokes. The guy is a player who loves the big moments that decide matches and doesn't hide.
For all the stat lovers though who purely look at his averages and decide he's average because of this, he's pushing both in the right direction. Batting average now above 36 and the bowling average into the 32s.
His average since the start of 2016 so 4 years worth of performance which is when he's really been at his peak, his batting average is over 40 and his bowling average is under 30. That seems reflective of the level he's at right now and that is a top class all rounder.

Averages only tell half the story and Stokes average is pretty good for an all-rounder anyway

match winner and better batsman and bowler than his averages suggest. you seem to have a bit of an average obsession.
I think we are in agreement about Stokes
I do like averages to align with the quality of a cricketer.
A lot of time they actually do, but when they don't I get grumpy.

40-plus batting and sub-30 bowling averages are top class for a specialist, let alone an all-rounder having both.
People who don't rate Stokes are fools. It's as simple as that.
Don’t win many test matches these days so I’ll enjoy this one.

Spot on. Any test match cricketer who's batting average is above their bowling average is a special player. And Stokes is only improving. He's now a top class batsman, probably the best fielder in the world, and often gets big wickets.
Then once you take the stats away he is the bloke that delivers in the biggest moments. He'll end up being one of the greats of the game.
