Sir Alex Ferguson. The end.
Voted for Revie just now
Truly great managers in my view who can produce a team over a long span of time, a decade or more, though that is harder to achieve these days because football has changed.
Other great managers imo are Bill Nicholson, loved that Spurs side of early sixties, double winners, good in European competitions.
Brian Clough...Leeds made 2 mistakes there, hiring him in the first place, then sacking him...a major mistake considering what he achieved.
Bill Shankly, set a great standard and legacy at Liverpool, with Bob Paisley a fantastic successor.
Truly great managers not only build great teams and clubs but bring a significant economic success to cities and towns they work in...

Yeah because Fergie never indulged in gamesmanship ever.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Gamesmanship doesn't come inside brown envelopes...
Most managers are so desperate to win or not to lose that they will employ any measure of cheating or gamesmanship...they maybe some exceptions to that but not many.
Ferguson was undoubtedly a great manager but he employed intimidation to officials to achieve results, most officials didn't bite back because they knew if they took him on the consequences would be they wouldn't get the gig again.
Fergie,
Just imagine what he might have done, If he'd left the booze alone !
Fergie was a success in Scotland as well, winning a couple of titles and a European trophy.
I watched The Damned Utd the other night (for the 2nd time). Clough doesn't come out of it to well, but Revie even worse. I know it's a film, needed to be taken with a pinch of salt, btw!

Always makes me giggle this. Always one that pipes up with it.
Imagine a fit and healthy 30 or 40 something being intimidated by an OAP. What was Fergie going to do to them?

I think if you look at sustained success there is only ever going to be one winner.
Truth is all managers have a sell by date in which you only ever seem toi get diminishing returns from them.
Their game dosent change with the times (Wilko to me was a big sufferer of this) or after bursting onto the scene they never hit that next level.
In a lot of ways Fergie is unique as he had a long career where you never thought he wouldnt win something.

Cling to that if you want, Cal, but there's no smoke without fire. When respected figures in the game like Bob Stokoe claimed they'd been approached by Revie to throw matches and even one of his own players was going to blow the whistle on him, it's all a bit damning. The fact he ran off to the Middle East when the whistle was about to be blown doesn't look good either. Great manager, great team, but he'll always be blighted by those allegations for me I'm afraid.

Well seriously already alluded to the consequences of intimidation of officials if you read back...and are seriously denying Ferguson didn't intimidate officials, as my friend Cal posted, ref to the psychological aspect Ferguson employed?

You have to have huge respect for Ferguson's achievements because he did it over an extended period of time at man u. However, he did that at a large, wealthy club with really strong squad (Robson, Whiteside, Mcgrath etc).
What elevates him above others is that he managed to get success at other clubs, Aberdeen and St. Mirren, although its often forgotten about the accusations of illegal payments and the intimidation of club staff who would not sanction his illegal payments.
I never particularly rated Dalglish as a manager, felt he inherited a team and let that team decline and then bought a team at Blackburn.
Paisley, great success, but at one club.
Revie, great success, but at one club.
Clough is the one that stands out as he had success at multiple clubs and produced so many players consistently over the years.
