“When you look at most of the recent winners in the CL, can you actually say that there are any other sides from that particular season that are better than who actually won it? Are there any teams in Europe right now that are better than Liverpool? Or Real Madrid the 3 years previous? The only one in the last decade I can remotely think of would be Chelsea and Bayern”

I think Liverpool getting into the final two years on the bounce, and especially Real winning it 3 times on the trott, both throw weight behind a claim they were best club at the time. But if we’re going to say just making the final means you’re up there were Spurs the second best team in Europe last year? No disrespect to them, but of course they weren’t, just as Liverpool weren’t the year before. As I say it’s a cup competition, not a definitive measure of the strongest team in European football each year. If you do the cl and league double you’ve got a fair bit of weight behind that claim I suppose.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We aren't talking about finalists, we are talking about winners. My point is, generally, the best team in Europe wins the CL, it doesn't matter who they face in the final. As I say, the only real exception to this would be Chelsea beating Bayern in 2012 within the last decade.

I know Man City won the PL last season so that argument could be said, but I bet if you asked teams in Europe who they'd rather face, Man City or Liverpool, I bet they'd say Man City imo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

But that’s a weird claim to me. If the best team in Europe win it each year, surely the second best team finish runner up? As I say if you win the league and cl double fair play you’ve got a lot of weight behind a claim you’re the best, but even then it’s not a definite. Say PSG win both one year for example...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would say that Spurs were the 2nd best team in Europe last season, that's why they got that far. I know people say "you can only beat what's in front of you" when referring to Ajax, but they've had to have got past some good sides on the way (like they did in the form of Juve and Real Madrid) and so did Spurs in a group with Barcelona, Inter as well as beating Man City in the knockout stages.

I do think there is a degree of context, but overall I'd say the best team in that competition wins it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Impossible to say. Under the rules of the competition liverpool were the best team un Europe last season. Spurs were somewhere between 2and best and 9th best but we cannot know exactly where they fall in that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What rules are they then 😂
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you not understand the rules of the competition? If you beat a team then you are better than them and so proceed whilst they are knocked out.

Hence liverpool were better than spurs, who were better than ajax, who were better than madrid. Unfortunately spurs didnt play any of the other 7 teams in Liverpool's half of the draw, and they failed to beat liverpool. So it is entirely possible that all 8 teams in thay half were better than spurs.

UEFA (who decide such things) have designated the CL as the premier competition in europe. The best team is determined by their rules.

Wait...you don't think the FA designated the premier competition in England? Or that UEFA designate the premier competition in Europe?

You are really not very bright.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you been following the conversation or not? Put it this way. If City won the CL this season I certainly wouldn’t be going round telling people we are the best team in Europe because Liverpool are certainly better than us at the moment.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

But we weren't good enough to win the competition that decides the best team in europe. Whomever won it would be.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sound

As I say it’s a cup competition, not a definitive measure of the strongest team in European football each year.
------

The world cup is also a cup competition. The CL is as much a definitive measure of the strongest team in European football as the world cup is the definitive measure of the strongest team in the world
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So Liverpool this season aren't anywhere in the top 8 teams in Europe.

I can live with that
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just because it's the measure of the best team doesn't mean the order of teams is the same as the result all the way down to the quarter finals. What a pearler.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think one of your fellow wallopers said exactly that earlier
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So if someone else jumped off a cliff would you jump off too?

I've already told you I wasn't five years old, so yes, I do know how great that United team was. It was better than this current Liverpool team for sure, who stand in a poorer era compared to the one that United team played in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You talk like Man City are the greatest team this planet has ever seen, they have recorded over 100 points in a season and then 98 the following season. Not to mention that out of the last 4 European finals (CL and EL from the previous 2 seasons), 5/8 teams have been from England. A bit linear to say its a poorer era in terms of quality though isn't it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is a poorer era. This league is complete shiiit from 3rd downwards. Garbage team after garbage team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I know that's why Spurs got to the CL final last season and both Arsenal and Chelsea reached the EL final as well.

Who else back in United's era 15 years ago were better than the current crop now?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Chelsea and United from then would beat current Liverpool and city. Arsenal and Liverpool from then would destroy current Chelsea and Lester.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You talk absolute garbage you really do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Liverpool fan can’t accept his team isn’t the bestest most amazingest perfectest ever team, why am I not shocked

Only if it was a UEFA sponsored competition to decide who the best at jumping off cliffs was.

Would still be stupid thing to do though, UEFA or not.

What has that got to do with anything either of us have said, at all?

You say that United are better because they performed when they were in a "better" era even though Man City have broke the points record and Liverpool have the highest points total for any 2nd placed side, as well as Spurs reaching a CL final and both Arsenal and Chelsea in the EL final last season in the current era which, imo, disproves that theory. So yes, you just talk garbage. Just say mindless possibilities without looking at all aspects.

What's that got to do with Liverpool being the best team?

I was just playing by the Liverpool supporters code.Only your judgments and comments count,so played along and agreed with what they said then played along.

Pointing out that if they believed the winners of the CL are always the best, runners up are second best, then this season by that Liverpool fan logic,LFC aren't in the top 8 best teams in Europe.

Of course I forgot another Liverpool supporters code, mainly that goalposts can be made at any stage to attempt to win an argument, despite it meaning what was said earlier is now to be ignored.

Of course another part of the LFC fan code is the liberal sprinkling of verbal abuse and or swearing.
