It's akin the the N@zis telling people not spend their money at Jewish owned businesses.

🙄 what a bizarre comparison

It's certainly not great. Any right minded person would agree that what happened in the US was horribly wrong and that racism in general is abhorrent. With that being said, adopting a "them vs us" mentality is not a great look

It's frustrating to hear things like that. Making an "Us and Them" issue into a "Them and Us" issue isn't really the kind of change anyone should be hoping for.

Sadly for a lot of black people the system has already made it an ‘us’ and ‘them’ situation. What he’s asking for is fair - for more more black people to protest in the best way possible - by using their wallets to help build up an economy that helps black people be in charge of their own destinies and to take control of their lives that way.

It’s very easy for people to say that these words are divisive and that they don’t see colour etc but black people just want to have their own stake in things and if encouraging black people to help build a black owned economy is the direction some people want to go then fair play.

Exactly. Its just tarring every white person with the racist brush. He's going to turn a lot of people against him with these types of views.

Not really. Racism is racism. If you want to create divisions based entirely on racial lines, you are part of the problem.

Is that really what he means? I mean, that's how he would explain it if asked for his view? Fair enough if so. But I read this article the other day:

https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2020/05/9841376/black-trauma-george-floyd-dear-white-people

This bit in particular irritated me: "The possibility that your Black colleague is afraid to go for a run, or terrified when her husband leaves the house, or just simply enraged by the incessant lies this country keeps telling us about equal liberties is so high you’ll need a ladder to get it down. And yet, she’s responded to your passive aggressive email, and he’s smiled through your condescending questioning."

The bit at the end - the absolute certainty that I, as a white reader, will have been passive-aggressive and condescending towards BAME colleagues I might have - is what I don't understand. What happened to George Floyd was disgusting and there is no doubt that all sorts of educational and societal change are needed, but why assume all white people are guilty of behaviours many, maybe even most, of us find reprehensible? As people have said, Joshua's words there aren't going to help at all.

And where are these black owned business's we are supposed to spend our money in?

posted on 7/6/20

These are his words..

We need to be united in non-violent demonstration, show them where it hurts and abstain from spending your money in their shops and economies, and invest in black-owned businesses. That's for all communities, if you want to uplift yourselves - invest in your own businesses”

It’s clear he’s saying the best way to combat the inequality that blacks people suffer from beyond their control is for blacks people to invest in their own communities and economies and stop waiting for a system that is stacked against them to catch up.

It doesn’t say white people will be banned. I’m sure white people will be welcome just as anyone will - but the difference is the profits go into raising up the black communities.
