Robb
Do you agree with the intentions of the BLM movement?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, why wouldn’t I?
Have you read their 13 guiding principles?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you agree with the abolition of the police then?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The abolitionists are a separate offshoot made up of a different group of people
But there is some logic to defunding the police, yes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Really
Go on then explain?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Go do some reading. It’s all out there. I’m not here to be your teacher.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Can’t find these offshoots on the internet for one
What logic is their to defund the police when we are already strapped for coppers? Stop trying to wriggle out of your ridiculous comment
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just to flip the question round. where in the intentions of the black lives matter movement does it mention defunding the police?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is one of their intentions. Robb thinks by posting an article from the guardian of all papers that suits the argument that there is logic in defunding the police. Unbelievable
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I take it you didn’t read the article then. No worries, continue to live in ignorance

There are clearly people who are intentionally misrepresenting what is meant by Black Lives Matter.
'Not getting it' is a pure question of volition. It is impossible not to understand.
What kind of excuse is it to say racism exists everywhere? How does that justify it in any way?
Sorry, but anyone with that mode of thinking doesn't belong in this century.

This is demonstrably incorrect. Not just with this but with almost anything, people who start off by being switched off to any issue can be 'switched on'.

Black Lives Matter means the same thing as Black Lives Matter Too
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To you it does but I would imagine that a lot of people wouldn’t agree with you. Adding ‘too’ has far less for people to (rightly or wrongly) get their backs up or dismiss the movement arbitrarily based purely on a slogan.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Those people will always find something to complain about. The name really isn’t that big an issue. A minority of idiots don’t get it but it’s been that way for centuries one way of another
But I do like the irony of a bunch of white people on here deciding what is an acceptable name for a black movement to have
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not about what is acceptable Robb. It's about what is most effective. You are missing the point
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You think it’s more effective. Doesn’t mean it is. BLM seems very effective. They don’t need to pander to people who want to make the name more friendly to insecure people
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The main purpose of the BLM movent is to educate. And many of the very people that it aims to educate are being immediately switched off the message by the slogan. I don't think that is effective.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That isn’t their main aim
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I should perhaps have said main weapon/tool rather than aim. But you get the point. A slogan that turns off a large proportion of your target demographic isn't a strong choice.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But how do you know it’s a large proportion? Not trying to wum you here but there seems to be an imagined high number of people put off by the name when in reality it seems to be doing just fine.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah it’s doing just fine at getting support and understanding from people who already support such thinking. The objective is to change the minds of people who don’t already think like that.
It’s like in politics with elections, you don’t win by getting more votes from the areas that generally already vote for you, you win by winning the areas that traditionally don’t vote for you.

I must have imagined all the ALM posts that keep getting posted and shared on Facebook. And the conversations I've had with people that seem genuinely perturbed at the suggestion that blakc lives are more important than white lives (in their head). I don't see how a slogan that can be used in a divisive manner is effective. Or at least as effective as it could be.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the main objective regarding BLM
“Four years ago, what is now known as the Black Lives Matter Global Network began to organize. It started out as a chapter-based, member-led organization whose mission was to build local power and to intervene when violence was inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes.
In the years since, we’ve committed to struggling together and to imagining and creating a world free of anti-Blackness, where every Black person has the social, economic, and political power to thrive.“
And the movement has come a long way since it started. Changing the name and pandering to those who have an issue with the name is pointless. Those people who make a life out of being outraged at black people having equal rights will never change.

melts, yeah I did get what you meant. But that’s why I think using the approach that has served the liberal voice well is a more effective way to go to apply pressure to make change. I just don’t think people that are opposed to the message will be responsive to it however it’s framed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the grand scheme of things, they won’t be at all. It does just stop the opportunity of the deflection that has happened already though.
I don’t think it’s a big thing either way and like I said earlier in the thread, the fact that the semantics is the debate is staggeringly stupid anyway!

“Defunding the police means taking the funds used to over-police Black and Indigenous communities and to heavily police homeless people and relocating them into infrastructure to boost the Black and Indigenous communities,” said Alexandra Kane, spokesperson for Black Lives Matter London

Do you agree with the intentions of the BLM movement?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, why wouldn’t I?
Have you read their 13 guiding principles?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you agree with the abolition of the police then?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The abolitionists are a separate offshoot made up of a different group of people
But there is some logic to defunding the police, yes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Really
Go on then explain?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Go do some reading. It’s all out there. I’m not here to be your teacher.

What logic is their to defund the police when we are already strapped for coppers? Stop trying to wriggle out of your ridiculous comment

People that immediately switch off the message due to the slogan aren’t open to being educated.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Or they are too stupid to see the true meaning of it. Trust me, there are plenty that are just too dumb to see that the slogan doesn't mean black lives are more important than white. They read and ALM post on Facebook and agree with it without giving it any real thought.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That would be the case by adding too. It’s confirmation bias.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not very helpful either. You cant just call people stupid and wonder they aren't coming around to your way of thinking.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I dont call people stupid to their face when debating the topic. I try to explain why it doesn't mean only black lives matter. That doesn't alter the fact they are too dumb to grasp it themselves.

Robb
Do you agree with the intentions of the BLM movement?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, why wouldn’t I?
Have you read their 13 guiding principles?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you agree with the abolition of the police then?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The abolitionists are a separate offshoot made up of a different group of people
But there is some logic to defunding the police, yes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Really
Go on then explain?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Go do some reading. It’s all out there. I’m not here to be your teacher.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Can’t find these offshoots on the internet for one
What logic is their to defund the police when we are already strapped for coppers? Stop trying to wriggle out of your ridiculous comment
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just to flip the question round. where in the intentions of the black lives matter movement does it mention defunding the police?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is one of their intentions. Robb thinks by posting an article from the guardian of all papers that suits the argument that there is logic in defunding the police. Unbelievable
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But where are you getting that it’s one of their intentions from?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

“Defunding the police means taking the funds used to over-police Black and Indigenous communities and to heavily police homeless people and relocating them into infrastructure to boost the Black and Indigenous communities,” said Alexandra Kane, spokesperson for Black Lives Matter London
