If Dortmund really wanted to troll us they’d email us and say that Sancho is now for sale @ £120 million

posted on 2/10/20

That was Van Gaal’s choice. Rooney and Martial were meant to be the strikers, with youth as a third option. Problem was that Depay was crap and he dropped him, so Martial then became the left winger and we were short up front. Luckily it meant Rashford found his way into the team.

But we spent a lot of money on strengthening the squad. You’ve also got to look at the wages we handed out that summer, especially to Schweinsteiger.

This theory that we don’t want to spend after a ‘good’ season doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.

At this point, would anyone not want us to spend £108 million this weekend on Sancho?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know... it's a hell of a lot of money for one young player. In another summer, maybe.

Baz. And he can suggest a suitable alternative who currently plays for Kilmarnock.

Yes, because we need this signing. We won’t all of a sudden change our targets and use those funds to strengthen numerous positions across the squad, it’s too late for that. So either we sign him, or we end up with a vastly inferior player, or nobody.

It’s not like Baz to think everyone over £50 million is a greedy money grabbing flop waiting to happen. Nope, not Baz

Ole said back in august that we’d ‘exploit’ the market due to covid. Now he’s saying he was wrong and doing the whole ‘I’m happy with my squad’ schtick.

Looks like our summer of business is over.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When did he say he was happy with the squad Robb? I haven't seen that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"They [United] know my view," added Solskjaer. "The transfer window is still open for a little while. If something happens in or out you will get to know.

"There are many ways of improving a team. I keep reading about the players who should be playing instead of the ones who aren't because they are performing well. That tells me I have a strong squad. There is competition for places.

"We need results. That is the only way of affecting the mood at the club - the players and staff. All the rest is short-term moods."
----------------------------------------------------------------------

And that is Ole saying he is happy with his squad?

You could probably by the town for that

Do you think 108 m got sancho would be good value?

But I don’t think we will, I think United are arrogantly thinking Dortmund will cave in and sell him. I can’t see them selling, even if United offer their asking price.

So the latter two suggestions seem most likely, which is incompetence on our part again.

I have a feeling we will get sancho on the last day. You might well be right though.

I don’t think anyone is saying it’s ‘good value’ but if he’s our number one target, is of a perfect age and fits in literally like a glove it’s silly imo to get as high as a (reported) £91 million bid and just give up.

I feel that if we get Sancho on Monday that James will say bye bye and be in a Leeds shirt on Monday night

i gave up thinking that we were capable of finding bargains about 10 years ago, and the days of evra, vidic, hernandez etc seem long gone. these days, even when we buy a player for a low transfer fee, we then proceed to f@ck it up by giving that player huge wages, turning him from a bargain into a millstone (DDG).

i've also said that i'd prefer the club to overpay for the right players (matic, pogba, maguire to an extent) than buy the wrong ones (schneiderlin, schweinsteiger etc).

so £108m good value? nope, but it's almost certainly better value than the alternatives we are presumably considering, because i am 99% sure that sancho would be a hit at the club, just not necessarily a £108m hit.

Rob, yeah we are a bit of an embarrassment in the market. But there’s not a lack of incentive to spend money (we outspend most clubs in Europe in fees and wages), nor are the owners using transfer funds for the Bucs or dividends.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

There does seem to be a lack of motivation to spend after high-ish league seasons

Summer of 15 - LVG comes 4th and we don’t spend enough to push on

Summer of 18 - Jose comes second and see above

Summer of 20 - Ole comes third and see above.

Perhaps a coincidence.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In fairness, in January '18 we signed Sanchez then spent £55m on Fred in the summer.

£420m over 5 windows shows we did spend the money Jose asked for. We only brought in around £100m in that time.

LVG also£300m in two seasons, although we brought in about £150m of that (ADM was signed and sold at a loss). We only actually spent £21m on average per player.

I remember people baulking at the Rio price but the whole ‘his transfer fee was more than paid off with 10 great years of service’ line was used and fair play, sometimes you can justify it that way.

Thing is, when Fergie spent big on this type of player, they almost always came good.

Tbf Buzza, we were competing with one of the best PL sides of all time and needed more than £391 million (the actual amount spent under Jose).

Someone like Sancho is young and talented enough to outlast a couple of maybe not so great managers. He seems like the type who would fit in any style as well.

I think that he will fit in with the players that we have. Especially with the additions of Bruno and VDB. Rashford, Martial, Greenwood and Sancho will all play better with quality creative CMs/AMs behind them. My main worry at the moment is that Pogba is going to play ahead of VDB and I just don't think he quite fits in with the rest of the players. He often dwells on the ball and I'm convinced we will see the same fluidity with him in the team.

you well-written post-condensing, better poster piggy-backing, smugly succinct tw@t.

Hindsight's a wonderful thing.

Schweinsteiger was injury prone so I think everybody had their doubts about him but the signing of Schneiderlin was received favourably by a lot of people, myself included. There were other players I'd have preferred but we needed a midfielder and Schneiderlin on paper seemed to fit our needs pretty well.

It's easy to say any player we've bought that hasn't worked out was the wrong player but there's obviously been something fundamentally wrong at United over the years given the amount of players we've signed who've fallen by the wayside.
