Our scouts were more awake than Bayern’s, one of them recommended him when he was 15. Though he wasn’t an attacking full back when we did, Bayern changed him into one when Alaba got injured.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not awake enough though were they, as Bayern have him and we don’t.

He’s okay but not turned out anywhere near as good as I hoped. He was supposed to be the ‘iceman’ when we signed him. More like a hot mess.

How's that the fault of a scout or scouts?
Bayern’s management were more awake than ours, not the scouts.

LVG didn’t rate Van Dijk, we signed Rojo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yep, take the dutch manager, and instead of ending up with VVD, de ligt, or de jong, we get Blind and Depay.
as for upamecano, according to the player's agent we farted him around on his personal terms (a property, specifically):
https://www.90min.com/posts/6291063-dayot-upamecano-s-agent-explains-why-previous-man-utd-move-failed-as-red-devils-renew-interest
In fairness, Depay was the hottest Dutch talent at the time, and one of the most highly rated anywhere in Europe. That he didn’t pan out doesn’t change that, it just shows how poor we’ve been at developing talent.
Yeah I read that about Upamecano a while back.
I want to blame someone so I am blaming them. it could be Ed’s fault mind.
He’s okay but not turned out anywhere near as good as I hoped. He was supposed to be the ‘iceman’ when we signed him. More like a hot mess.
.......
I would like to blame Jose for that but he is equally as bad under Ole. He just doesn’t look commanding.
In fairness to Ed, I wouldn’t necessarily put that at his door. That’s on the people responsible for signing youth team players. Ed wouldn’t be too involved with that side.
It does appear that the club are aware of how badly we’ve missed out on some of the top talents currently playing in Europe. We’ve been aggressively scouting, and buying up, promising young talent since Nicky Butt has started heading things up for the academy.
Giving them a pathway and development in the first team will be the next step. Could be argued that the likes of De Ligt, De Jong, Davies and Upamecano wouldn’t have become the players they have if United had nabbed in their formative years.
It would've been interesting to see if we'd have signed any of those players had they been around now given the recent improvements that have been made in recruitment at youth level.

---------------------------------------------
Yeah that's true.
From a purely playing POV I do sometimes wonder why young players would choose to come to United or any English club for that matter when there are other easier pathways into first team football in Europe and there's greater opportunity of playing football at a much higher level than what they'd get playing in England's youth leagues.

Yeah would be. At least it’s being addressed. And I don’t think this is strictly to do with international players either - we’ve been massively underrepresented at England youth level for years now. Something needs to be done about that.

Youth contracts in England are the best in the world. And many of them have got very good training facilities. Also it can be easier to make a pathway into the more lucrative English leagues if you don’t quite make it at the parent club, especially at Chelsea. I can understand the appeal.
On another note how far have AC Milan fallen? It took them a 24 penalty shoot out to make the Europey group stages.
we’ve been massively underrepresented at England youth level for years now. Something needs to be done about that.
-----------------------------------------------
There's something that's been slightly odd about that though for a while now because there have been times when our players have been overlooked at certain age levels and I couldn't quite figure out why.
Could be a case of continuity, as Chelsea and City academy graduates dominate the England youth teams. But then clubs like Arsenal, Everton and Spurs have been getting a pretty good representation at that level, so I’m not sure.
Greenwood’s an interesting one as he’s not played much at England youth level but made it to the senior team before anyone in his age group - and it’s not like United didn’t have this expectation. One thing I’ve read about Greenwood was that they’ve always wanted to temper expectations with him outside the club, but you’d assume the England youth set ups wouldn’t care about that.
Youth contracts in England are the best in the world. And many of them have got very good training facilities.
-------------------------------------------------
I know but I was only talking from a playing perspective. Good contracts and facilities won't necessarily increase your chances of a path into the first team.
I get your point about getting into the lower leagues but again in other countries you've probably an easier route into the first team at a club playing in a top division rather than a club playing in the lower leagues.
Depends on the league. But the earning potential of the lower leagues, especially it they can get up to even more lucrative leagues, is still better in England than all of Europe.
The name of these academies have gravitas in England. Look at United, despite the decline of the academy there’s still more United academy graduates playing in the English football pyramid than any other - though that may well be Chelsea now, haven’t checked recently.
I think the ones to really question are the top prospects leaving the Dutch league.
Joe Hugill's off to a very good start at United. There's a bit of Will Keane about him before he started suffering with serious injury.
Hopefully his career ends up being a lot better than Keane's.

Stood out for Sunderland when they played our U18s last year.
Will be interesting to see how he does against older lads, as his size gave him a big advantage at U18 level.
Looks like he’s got bags of goals in him though.
Latest reports that Dembele has snubbed us. Brilliant... now we're getting pied by players the fans don't even want!!!!
