Funny how the parents of these kids, not all, but certainly a good proportion, never miss out on the latest phones, TV's and alcohol/drugs.

It's always someone else to blame though i find. Never there prioritising.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How do you propose someone gets a job these days if they don't have a mobile phone, never mind one that is capable of sending and receiving emails?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's amazing how short sighted some folk are.

Most people rely on their mobile phone, (web & calls) every day, and could not maintain their everyday affairs without one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What's short sighted?

I never said they shouldn't have one. They are needed in modern life and for the reasons you say. But they don't need the latest. They don't need the latest, they could make do is the point i'm making.

What evidence do you have that supports the view that " a good proportion never miss out on the latest phones."

And even if "they" did, most mobile phone providers offer free upgrades.

posted on 20/11/20

How do you know they're the latest though? Most phones these days, even cheap ones, look stylish and smart. and could easily be mistaken for the latest model.

posted on 20/11/20

The very idea that someone on benefits has a really expensive phone is simply made up and based on nothing but perception and bigotry. It's a fvcking nonsense.

posted on 20/11/20

I'm also not aware of any public or private body that records the spec/model of mobile phones sold to low-income parents.

Curious to find out how anyone could support such a statement as above, with any tangible material evidence.

Why do I need to supply evidence for an opinion? Are you going to supply evidence to refute my opinion?

I'd never want to see any child starve, hungry or any doing without. But I see parents, regularly, who ensure there own needs take priority way before there kids.

I've had situations in the past where I've had to make a decision around something i'd like, over ensuring my daughter had what she needed - i'd always wait and save, her requirement always came first. It's called parental responsibility.

All the above being said, my original reply was in response to the political points scoring of the OP.

I'm ex-military and a parent - i've a view.

Trouble i find with these debates are that if you in anyway disagree, then you're labelled (Daily Mail reader/shortsighted/uncaring etc.....) when in actual fact you just believe in taking personal responsibility. We all need help from time to time, and i support anyone - especially as a result of COVID - who need to be helped right now. Whilst furlough hasn't been perfect, it was widely praised as a good measure - by the tories of all people !!!

I work 8 years on Government employment contracts and we had to give them burners just to be able to look for work and accept calls and you've got people that think on £47 a week the unemployed are rocking iPhone 10's

What a ridiculous assertion, how could you possibly know that?

Too much daily mail.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If parents were provided with food stamps instead of money, or at least a portion of that, then we'd probably not have this argument.

Do people who don't work for their income deserve the freedom to spent it as they wish? I wonder....

I can't speak for all of society, but when I knocked around with lads and families living on benefits, they always made money from other sources. They also almost always had some of the nicer things, phones, TV, consoles etc. They just buy most of it second hand, usually stolen.

One common trick was an emergency loan, for clothing and such, where they'd knock 10p a week off your benefits to lend you £50. Obviously you can only get away with it so many times.

You claimed "a good proportion, never miss out on the latest phones, TV's and alcohol/drugs"

I was just curious how anyone could form such an opinion without any supporting evidence. Typically if an opinion such as the above is made, it would have greater merit if supported by some sort of material evidence to back it up.

If you've no evidence to back up your claim, fair enough, it's not the end of the world
