Back to electric cars for a second.

It's amazing that they're so expensive

What's expensive Boris?

I hope they become more attractive for younger drivers especially as in just five years Gov plan to stop selling of any fossil fuel cars, even hybrid.

When I say attractive for young people I mean price and the fact that many young people may not have a permanent residence with a driveway where they can just install a mains equipment to charge overnight. Increased infrastructure as mentioned in the video of widespread charging points that charge quickly will help with the latter

U'mm not sure where you get the idea the government (uk) is banning new fossil cars in 5 years. New fossil car sales will be banned in 2030, with Hybrids following 5 years later.

As for the cost, there is a huge step change happening, and it will affect all aspects of peoples lives. This is about more than Transport, but the whole way we generate use and store energy, and EV's are part of that.

There is a void that is quickly being filled by all sorts of new technology. 2030, might not seem that far away, but will be massive in terms of green innovation.

By 2030, EV's will be a no brainer.

Oh, I might add, a 350kw charger is damn quick

To put it into some sort of perspective, my Leaf has a 24kw battery (small by todays standards) If I could charge at 350kw (Leaf can only do up to 50kw) but if I could, I would literally fill up in minutes.

It'd be nice if it was more than Telsa were making interesting electric cars. 90% of them are extremely expensive SUVs and the rest are rather dull hatchbacks.

MINI are working on a JCW MINI-e, but the problem with that is you'd end up with a MINI.

Basically, an electric car like my current car (Suzuki Swift Sport) that doesn't cost more than I've earned in 5 years would be nice.

It will be like the smoking ban. In a few years we will think, why did we let other people fill our lungs with pollutants due to their selfish behaviour? Being in a pub with people smoking is the same as walking down a street with people blasting out poisonous gases in my face. Should I collect it in a container and go and deliver it through their letter box? "Excuse me you left this behind on my street and it made me choke".

People will change when the costs of their actions are internalised. So that they suffer the consequences of their own selfish actions. Money is the only thing they will understand. Either that or beat them with a stick or a whip. Although some would like that so need an alternative. That's the issue.

Tesla are certainly leading the pack, and now have the biggest market cap of any auto maker out there. they have been caught asleep at the wheel, and are desperately trying to play catch up.

There are already a surprising list of new EV models hitting the streets, and this is just the beginning of what is coming, choice is not going to be an issue.

Remember EV's are getting cheaper all the time, while running costs and maintenance for EV's are also far cheaper. there are many other benefits too.

The demise of the combustion engine is closer than people think.

Agree with that Gary Brady, In the future people will be horrified by the thought that it was normal to poison the air we breath.

Nobody will want to go back to todays polluted world.

Would you advocate the eradication of people who pollute over a certain amount? Their poxy lives, although insignificant in the grand scheme of things, accumulate with other poxy existences to form a threat to other species' planet (it's not ours, we are cants). Kill them off like we do with deer, for the good of their own species.

Imagine if another species started thinking our species was getting out of control and started killing us. Probably deserve it to be fair.

I sometimes wish we could just box up all the neaderthal's, and put them in their own stinking polluted world, and let them get on with it. While the rest of us lived our lives and bought up our kids in the clean and healthy environment they deserve.

Sadly they will have to be dragged kicking and screaming, much like the anti smoking brigade were. but as you say, nobody would choose to go back now.

They're doing that in Europe. It's called Brexit.

Nah we need to kill them off. They breed too quickly. Instead of McDonald's Drive thru, we can convert them to McDonald's Die Thru. Wouldn't cost too much to just remove a couple of letters on the sign. Then instead of slowly killing them with McDonald's food, we just kill them immediately, preferably with some ironic Saw like method so just before they die, they realise the error of their ways. Too late.

Miles and miles of white Audis queued up thinking they're getting their daily dose of shiiite. Little do they know, their time is up.

You’re right - not sure why I thought that. Though I read somewhere they’d decided to bring date forward to 2025 😅

McDonald’s die thru

posted on 5/12/20

One thing about electric cars, surely that will mean everyone will be buying new ones? The second hand market might be interesting because I’d expect batteries by their very nature to deteriorate over time, so buying a 3 year old EV means you may only get 85% of capacity because of battery degradation.

Anyone know any figures on that?

posted on 5/12/20

So adding to that. Means most people will be buying on pcp deals. I don’t. Never have. I don’t buy new because it’s expensive and daft, I don’t buy pcp because I don’t want to spend loads each month on effectively a hire car.

At the mo, I can go out and buy a really good 3 year old car that’s just about worn in and working really well for a decent price, but for an EV I’d by buying a car past its best, like buying a petrol car where the fuel tank has shrank by 15%....

As far as battery degradation is concerned. It is more a myth than reality. New Cars batteries typically come with a 7 to 8 year warranty.

As far as my car is concerned, which is now 4 years old, still has the same range as when I bought it.

Meanwhile billions is being poured into battery research with New battery tech only increasing battery life, with Tesla batteries potentially hitting a 1 to 2 million mile life cycle.

I think it is fair to say in the early days of EV's nobody was sure how batteries would hold up, now energy density and cost are the biggest factors.

Give us a break with this preachy bulsheet. Why would you walk down a street with people blasting poisonous gases in your face? Why not use another street? Or go to another pub? F off.

Fair comment. You are correct, they will get better. But I still suspect there will be degradation. I don’t think there’s any rechargeable battery that’s immune to that
