Southgate bottled it

I don’t think he played for penalties but I said at the start that the formation was too negative. Great in the first half but as soon as Italy got momentum it was going to be hard to come back. Needed a positive change much earlier. Even Sancho and Rashford - one should have come on ten minutes earlier, not just for penalties.

Gareth Southgate...

More like Gareth Outgate.

Why would you play for penalties when you are 1 up?

Sat back as soon as we scored. Awful tactics from a mediocre manager.

Far too negative.

The second half was made for Grealish. Break the play up and stop Italy from gaining any flow or momentum.

Like with Denmark he would wait and see what happens instead of being bold and forcing the issue

He's an idiot. Cost you the tournament.

Who do you get though...assuming he's English.

Brendan Rodgers for me...that would be good

Complete bottler

Scored after 2 mins, Italy were there for the taking

So he decides to sit back and invite them on to score

Absolute shambles of tactics

GET RID OF THE CLOWN

We were “sitting back” with the formation/starting XI. That was the problem. We were good enough in the first half to grab a second.

Rashford, kid has had a pants end to the season and now this as well. I think he’ll get over it though hopefully

He's had two of the easiest runs to the final in the world cup and now in the euro's, the latter of which he had a huge home advantage with very little travel.

The only tricky game was against Germany but they are crap these days.

In the pressure matches against good teams he doesn't have the tactical edge.

Beating the likes of Panama, Ukraine and Denmark aren't good enough. Need to win the big games.

Don't get me wrong, he deserves praise but we always fall short for a reason. We were parking the bus for most of the game and still have cloggers like Rice and Phillips in midfield.

Awful manager.

Needs to go, but for some reason is heralded as a hero.

Yep

Thought he could hold off Italy for 88 mins. What a fool.

But fair play getting to the final was an achievement for England. I predicted we wouldnt get out of the group.

Unfair of Rash and Sancho to be expected to come on and win the cup for England in the shootout without getting much game time. Other regulars should have stepped up.

Anyway. Euros done. Back to club football.

I hate that the default when playing against any half way decent team isn't, right, we have 7 or 8 of the best attackers in world football, lets get at them.

It's how do I get as much defence on the pitch as physically possible. Such a negative manager throwing away the talent that we have.

It was obvious from the first minute of the second half it wasn't working, and it took until they scored to change anything.

i didn't watch the match but southgate bottled it England loses again

Southgate is still the best Engliah manager since Sir alf.

He could still win the WC next year, too.

Harsh on Rice and Phillips, as both were very good tonight and not the problem at all. We needed to bring on another attacker for Mount much earlier than we did. And we needed not to bottle penalties again. That’s all.

Give up football mate if you think them two were good. It was mens Vs boys in midfield.

Doubtful. England had every advantage and still didn’t win a home tournament. Unless Southgate starts to trust his attacking players then when the real pressure is on his side will just rinse repeat like today.

He needs to change formation and find a quality midfield player first.

First half they were good, lots of space because Shaw & Trippier were able to get forward a lot. Second half, almost none existent because we were penned back & had the FBs playing flat with the CBs.
