20 odd runs light

Feel like we are 50 light. Burns, Sibley, Bairstow, Lawrence and Buttler all made starts, one or two of them should have kicked on and made a 50. Curran getting a 32 down the order is useful but more runs should have been scored by batsmen not called Root in that second innings.

Lovely day of cricket, really was. England's batting order stood up and put up a competitive chase.

India 1 down.

Tommorow mornings session is going to be tense.

Feels like time for Hameed to come back in for Crawley. And I've been on Sibley's side since before he was called up but I'm starting to feel like he's just too limited.

posted on 7/8/21

Sibley might not score many runs, but his batting meant Root came in after 17 overs, rather than 7, and Sibley stayed with him til the 45th. We're gonna need batsmen who can bat time in Australia, last time we did anything there was with Trott at three, refusing to give his wicket away whatever happened.

He is similar to Compton really, today he definitely got caught in a just don't give your wicket away. For the first 15 overs or so, that works but you do need to be able to find a couple of ways to score runs. Cook was the master of this, bowl full and outside off, he will leave it alone but drop it short and he can cut or pull masterfully for 4. He also would occasionally look fluent even when scoring slowly. I don't think Sibley has ever looked fluent and thats an area of his game that needs to improve.

Hameed for Crawley is a must for me. He just isn't what we need on our test 3 right now.

Jimmy on a 5th day wicket. You really can't be waving the white flag.
First session will be key. In indias favour right now but the tide could turn quickly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Definitely not. Burns has had a less consistent run in the side between injury, being dropped and taking time off for paternity leave, and he's still ahead of Sibley on basically every relevant batting metric except high score (both tied on 133).

Total runs - Burns 1540 vs Sibley 1012
Average - Burns 32.77 vs Sibley 30.67
50s - Burns 9 vs Sibley 5
100s - Burns 3 vs Sibley 2
Balls faced - Burns 3466 vs Sibley 2897
Scoring rate - Burns 44.43 vs Sibley 34.93
Innings top scores - Burns 9 vs Sibley 3
% team runs scored - Burns 12.2 vs Sibley 10.27

Burns has even taken twice as many catches (20 vs 11).

I know Burns looks unorthodox, and don't get me wrong his stats aren't where we want them to be. But at least when Burns gets a bit of a consistent run (which he'll hopefully get now barring another freak injury) he is able to score more, and less slowly. Whereas Sibley can get completely stuck and doesn't justify the slow pace with steady runs like Trott or Cook did.

I do want to see Sibley succeed but I'm less convinced by the match that he will.

posted on 7/8/21

Also for what it's worth, Burns has been in and out of the Test side again in 2021 and still averages far better than Sibley who has been picked for (I believe) every test match - 34.11 vs 21.73.

Burns even outperformed Sibley in the County Championship too (av. 47.46 vs 39.00).

Nah, Burns is a better player, opener, leader than Sibley. He's has a poor game but he will get runs in this series.
