Jason Roy's problem is he's too tense...he spends the first five overs wondering why he's not out...(if he's still in) and he's too eager to make runs quick
This can be coached out
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jason Roy's "problem" is that he bats at 5 in red ball cricket and has been asked to open in tests.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So given the problem with him I've identified - can this be coached to adapt...?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess you meant White ball
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nope. I'm saying that when Roy was brought into our test team to open when he doesn't even do that for his county. That was the problem he had.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh I see...don't watch county cricket myself

Well he should never be opening the batting in tests. So that cannot be coached.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But is he good enough to be batting say 5...over someone else

Unless we coach players better (who should already have a basis of skill anyway) we will struggle hugely
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Coaching better isn't really a thing when it comes to taking modern players who from 10 years old have been brought up to have one day skillets. Once a player reaches test level you're not suddenly going to turn them onto Allistair Cook. Players are picked and told to play their game. Ben Stokes is about the only one to evolve into a top order player by adapting. Look at what happened when Alex Hales and Jason Roy came in. You can't just coach them how to play test cricket when everything they have done before has been about white ball skills.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So...do we opt out of test cricket then
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And how does a (from the age of 10) one day player reach test level exactly...?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're twisting my words slightly. Players will be picked to play test cricket obviously, that doesn't mean they have the skills needed to be world class/level needed. There are countless examples of that in this team. Players playing tests but their primary skillset is based around white ball cricket.
I've seen it plenty. Kids who are involved in the country structure netting and defending 5% or the balls they face in a 30 minute net. More time practicing ramp shots. No mindset being coached in terms of batting time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure they do...hence my question re opting out of test cricket...if we don't teach it...what's the point
Roy obviously opens in white ball...which I guess is why we try him in tests here...so question still stands...why can't we teach/coach a test approach...he obviously wants to open in tests
Hales too...for that matter
And why can't Burns or Sibley open with a proper approach...are they simply not good enough full stop..?
I know you're a big advocate for Roy and part of feels like he never really got an extended chance. He did okay in the warm up for the Ashes test against Ireland and scored a 70 odd. Then he got the Ashes series where he struggled but Warner was even worse as was the other Aussie opener. I think Burns doing so well made Roy's form look really bad though.
Under Bayliss, he may have grown into the role against lower quality attacks but I can't see that happening with Silverwood. Maybe he should have another go though, look at Rohit, think he was in and out of the test team quite a bit because of his odi form before he finally cracked it. I don't think he's the answer but it does feel like we are approaching a why not give him another go territory. We are desperately short on alternatives if Hameed doesn't work out either.
Players just need to come out play their natural games. It seems like there is a fear of getting out to an attacking shot at the risk of having the pundits and media slam them for it.
I feel like the majority of the team got it right in the last test, that first innings was one of the best we have had in ages batting second. I can't remember the last time a team scored over 350 against us and we went passed them. Usually this team has collapsed when faced with first innings total of that size. Unfortunately we ballsed it up on the last day but the first innings was encouraging.
And yes, I know Root glued it all together and scored a decent chunk of the runs but others played a hand too.
Wood out of the third Test.

Brilliant....🏏😒
Kohli has won the toss First time he's ever won the toss in England I think
India to bat, not sure England will mind too much with the overcast conditions although it's set to be grey throughout. Surprised Ashwin isn't getting a look in but I guess all 4 of India's seamers turned up in the last test so it would have been harsh to drop one.
Overton in for Wood, I feel that's based on his batting ability over Mahmood although I think he's pretty handy with the bat in the tail. With the pitch being slow though, extra pace from Mahmood may have been the better way to go but we'll see.
Ugh. You look at our lineup and you can't help thinking we'd do well to scrape a win against teams like Sri Lanka or West Indies at the minute. We're as weak as I can remember in my whole time watching cricket (since 2005 ). Craig Overton is never going to be the answer until he discovers a way to magic up an extra 7-8mph of consistent pace. I'd have much preferred Mahmood.
And the batting... Well. Malan is probably the best next cab off the rank but I do wonder if Sam Hain will ever get a look in. Shame we can't accurately judge anyone's red ball form since no-one has played it in months
I'm just hoping we can somehow keep the series alive before I go to the oval next week!
Can't see it though. We're so weak. Once India get over 300 we will lose as we can't handle runs on the board for the opposition.
