when we consider we've already been top 7 twice, surely we can agree 7>10 so 10 is still regression
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
It isn't that simple Tino. We have progressed in some ways and struggled in others. A fully fit Neto could have changed things, A firing Jimines could have meant a top six. It is all hypothetical. But we do have a more than decent team. But we are one of the top ten teams in England, something that would have been a pipe dream, just a few years ago.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
in what ways have we progressed?

stadia and facilities? nope

starting XI? questionable but nope

squad depth? nope

what progression have you seen our kid?

Far too much pessimism here. To say Brighton are an equal proposition as Wolves is ridiculous. They have just had their best season ever. They have never invested in quality of the likes of Neves, Jimenez, Moutinho etc and probably never will. Everton have just scraped survival and the general perception is they need to cut back on their spending. Palace have done well this season but 12th is seen as a fantastic season for them yet 10th is a disappointment for us.

We’ve lost a few games so the moaners have an excuse to moan but let’s see what the summer brings before we start preparing for a return to League One

and without the rose tinted glasses DJ, are we really clear of the likes of Brighton and Palace? similar size grounds and turnover but without the draw of london or the south coast.

Everton are clearly bigger than us

Brighton and Palace are improving, we are not,
but we would have if we had spent just a little bit of money on ready players in the last two windows and not wasted it.

We are no longer stuck in the Championship, are competing in the top half of the Prem, buying players from the likes of Barcelona.

I want European football, I want to win the Prem, I want to win Trophies, but I am realistic enough to understand, that is easier said than done.

Always amuses me how people that moan are considered realistic and people who are positive must be wearing rose tinted specs.

I am much more realistic on this issue than you are being Tino. I don’t know whether Wolves will this summer attract players of a similar quality to when we signed Neves, Jimenez, Moutinho etc. but I am certain we have more chance of doing so than Palace or Brighton. I wonder if any star player from Portugal, Spain or Mexico have even heard of those clubs.

As for Everton, don’t know how a big club gets defined but if that’s what got them so close to relegation this season then I’m more than happy with the size of wolves

I said I think in this moment we LOOK LIKE a "smaller, less ambitious" club. My point was - if you're a Neto when we bought him and you have offers from Brighton and us now - you've got some really young, exciting players at both clubs, a more experienced, probably more highly rated manager in Potter, the vibe at Brighton must just feels better at the moment because they're all pulling in one direction and because they finished so strongly - they have the momentum and they look a better bet for my money, right this moment, to finish above Wolves next year. That's my assessment for a young Portuguese player, imagine someone from another nationality where you lose that wolves draw too. Purely going on the last few years investment you wouldn't expect Wolves to invest particularly big either. Even if you still think Wolves are a bigger draw, could you honestly say the gap is as big as it was two or three years ago? Clearly this all changes if we invest well and early and in players who signal ambition.

So my point isn't that we're regressing, it's that it feels like the ambition has been dialled down from when we were promoted. We no longer feel like the best of the rest or that our project is so standout or defined that it gives us an edge. You say you don't know if we can attract the likes of Neves or Moutinho or Jiminez, doesn't that in itself tell you something about how you view our attractiveness to players? Neves came when we were in the Championship... You're saying there's some doubt about whether we're able to attract players of the same standard that we recruited in the Championship?

OK let's be realistic

Do the young Portuguese players you speak of know us or know of us cos of Mendes?

Only asking because I'm struggling to think of many Portuguese players we had from when I was born in 1979 until let's say the end of the Morgan era

Tino, how much further do you imagine we can progress? Realistically, we are about our level. To be a top ten Prem team is quite an achievement. To compete for the top six regularly, is a big ask.

posted on 24/5/22

That’s a fair point

posted on 24/5/22

Top ten is a good achievement and if that's the target or ambition of our current regime then so be it we're the envy of 80 football league clubs, that said 7th to 10th wasn't the stated ambition by our owners..

In answer to your question on how far we can go I think we'll be lower than 10th next season as Everton, Newcastle and villa will be above us.

Now answer my question how in your opinion have we progressed

posted on 24/5/22

We were told by Fosun that we were going to challenge the top teams in the world.
Settling for 10th in the Prem is hardly that and don't give me the flannel that it was a ten year project.
They have shown very little ambition now for over 2 years and its more by luck that we have achieved what we have.
Yes, if the big promises had not been made then I would have been happy with were we are but we have been given false hopes.

Do you think Man City took this attitude when their owners came in? Newcastle now? Leicester? Clubs that show ambition stand a chance at least of being successful. I kind of agree with you, Wolves ambitions were reassessed and lowered when covid hit, their actions since then are those of a club that is happy bumbling around the middle of this league, not one that wants to challenge for trophies or Europe. We'll see over the next few weeks if there is any kind of shift in policy or ambition to take us in the right direction. But if it doesn't then Shi and Sellars need to quit all the talk of becoming a top club and be honest about where we're heading.

Nothing more pathetic than the 'we were in the championship once' argument. Seventh is our bench mark, nothing less given the owners stated ambitions.

And lets be honest about progress. Have we signed a single forward better than Jimenez in his prime? No. Hell, have we signed a forward better than Jota? Still a no. Man, i am not even sure we have signed a forward better than Cavaleiro yet ffs.

Have we signed a single midfielder better than Neves, Moutinho, Donk or even bloody Saiss? Still a no.

Have we shined a single defender better than a prime Boly or Coady? No again.

Now i love Ait-Nouri but again, is he better than Jonny? No.

So in short, where have we improved the team the last two years? Goalkeeper and where else?

Progress my arris.

posted on 25/5/22

Yes, it is easy to pick up Jota's, Jimines, Neves type players. That is why everyone else is doing it.

Is Ait better than Jonny? he ain't worse, just younger. Chiquinho is a quality signing, Sa is a quality signing,Toti is a quality signing.

We are at the level we can afford, we might have moments when we do slightly better, there might be times we do worse, but compete in regularly in the top six, let alone top four, is a big ask.

Cheers Tino, I think

But you will have to tell me, what was the question?

posted on 25/5/22

for the 5th time... in your opinion (and no swerving or moving goalposts) how have we improved this season, based on our successive 7th placed finishes

posted on 25/5/22

Tino you are asking the wrong question. It is not how we have improved, it should be how do we improve?

We are no longer competing in the Championship, or even the bottom half of the Prem, we are competing with the top teams in England.

If your answer to improving is to chuck money at it, I'm sorry my friend, I can't agree. Firstly spending money can cause more problems than it solves, Look at Everton, or even worse Sunderland. But there are many more examples.

Secondly, we are competing against teams with much deeper pockets, It would be stupid to go toe to toe in a fight we can't win.

I would do exactly what Wolves are doing, building the squad as best we can bringing in players to slowly try and I highlight the word try, to improve the squad.

It is far more challenging than simply spending money, but that is what we face. Oh BTW I do believe we will spend some decent money this summer, but that is only made possible, by being prudent with our spending the last few years.

YOU said we have improved, I asked how have we improved?

not sure why you cant back up your own statement

I told you how we have improved. But also pointed out we are now at a point when how have we improved, changes to how do we improve.

If you have an answer to that one, I'm sure there are many clubs that will very interested in hearing it.

hang on, where did you say how we have improved? I can't seem to find that nugget

how can we improve? well we've had planning permission for 50 million years and that's not acted on, we could have knocked down the Steve Bull stand during the pandemic when we played behind the scenes football, that would have been an improvement.

maybe as well as bringing in the ones for the future we could sign some ready for the first team now and yeno spend a bit of cash that isn't purely self generated by selling established players.

maybe we could get proper football people in the club to act as a DOF and have another voice in the room that isn't Mendes.

maybe we could agree Scott Sellars isn't fit for purpose
