I think England should make it home from here.. Thank goodness for Root.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I will be surprised if they do.

Given our levels of fragility so would I - but we still should
Would it be too much for McCallum to install some basic batting principles into the site for future reference...
There are only three types of ball to face...ones to leave, ones to defend, and ones to play and score off.... Surely it's not rocket science

And for facks sake.
Stokes averages about 3 more at 5 than 6. And yet he's at 6.
Bairstow averages about TEN more at 6 than 5. And yet he's at 5.
Foakes is a grindy innings-builder who bats (and bats long) at 5 for Surrey. He's not a flashy, counter-punching wicket keeper like all our previous keepers have been because for some reason in England we think every keeper has to be our answer to Gilchrist. And yet there he is, at 7, because "that's where keepers bat in England" and it would hurt poor Johnny B's oh-so-brittle pride to shove him down to 7 without the keeping gloves even if it's for the good of the team.
And of course Bairstow can't bat against straight bowling, and we have a talented kid averaging 140 this year who would fit quite nicely in the lower middle order where he could bed in without the pressure of being shoved up to 4 or 3 and expected to immediately bat like a seasoned pro.
And Crawley pretty much averages single facking figures when he's not scoring tons. His County average barely scrapes 30, because no matter how dashing his strokes are, he can't resist a swish and so he always gets out cheaply after a start. But "He's Talented" so here we are again, another Rob Key Big-brain gamble.
This stuff is not rocket science. It's called looking at the facking stats and putting square pegs in square holes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Too many guys are being set up to fail by being messed around, thrust into positions they don't usually bat and not often given sustained opportunities.
Pope is one of the best bats in the country but at the same time that doesn't mean he can bat at 3. I mean if Root doesn't want to bat at 3 then there is no way we should be chucking Pope in there.
Compton, Sibley, Robson would probably be my top 3 at this moment in time. Three openers who want to occupy the crease and are more likely going to lay a platform for the rest.
Crawley won't be a success until he adapts his game and doesn't allow his eyes to light up every time there's a ball floated outside off stump for him.
I know we love our stats which in cricket don't always tell the whole story but they generally tell for more of a story than Key thinking "look I used to play cricket, I understand it more than you noobs, if I say Pope can bat at 3, then he can bat at 3"
I fail to see why Root would not both want to be & be demanded to be No 3
Best batsman of his generation & consistently backs it up....more non rocket science
I partially understand the decision with Root. He averages just over 50 at 4 and just under 40 at 3. So in theory, you should put him where we can get the best out of him. Strange we dont seem to twke that approach with others but at the same time they dont have almost 10k test runs.
However, at a time when we asked could he be considered part of the big 4 because Smith, Kohli and Williamson were much more consistent especially in scoring 100s. He's taken his game to another level, he is definitely in the very top bracket now and would probably be just as good at 3 as he would at 4.
Stokes in his first interview as captain said he wanted selfless cricketers. When Root was captain, he moved himself to 3 for the good of the team and now he's not captain, its strange that he hasn't offered to help Stokes and the team out. Although maybe Stokes himself thinks Root at 4 is best for the team.
If we had a proper top 3 then Root at 4 would be even more dangerous.
Odds of 3 to 1 on England bottling it and NZ getting the win today with paddy power

Tbf batting at 3 for England is usually the same as opening
It'll be interesting to see how Root approaches this with a few overs before the new ball he was positive towards the end of the day when you would've thought he'd be more circumspect, but he will want to knock off as many as possible before the new ball comes.
I would not want to be batting this morning. Looks very gloomy. I'd be nervous even if we had all 10 wickets left
Surprised we are starting on time....right gloomy here.

None of Lees, Crawley, Pope or Foakes are good enough test batsmen, that is 4 of the current top 7 who need upgrading
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Foakes is definitely good enough. Averages 40 for county and hasn't even played 2 series in a row yet so way too early to write him off. As Amanda says though, he shouldn't bat 7 as his game isn't counter attacking.
Pope is also good enough, he's shown it in the past. He just needs to actually be backed and stop being messed about and dropped for a few bad games.
Far worse players have had much longer rope than Pope and Foakes.
So, all out before the new ball?

I agree on Foakes. Class keeper and an obdurate batsman. His batting has suffered with England as he's very often batting with the tail and hasn't been able to play his natural game.
Disagree on Pope though. He's had so many chances and just looks like he can't handle the pressures of test match batting. Feels like another Ramprakash.
Would personally like Pope dropped and Root in at 3.
With the new ball 11 overs away, NZ have to bowl their best bowlers now due to amount of runs needed but they risk tiring their best bowlers out before the new ball. Hopefully
