Well played England. Joe Root in particular of course, backed up by Foakes and Stokes plus Anderson, Broad and debutant Potts with the ball.

Great win but having NZ 45/7 on day 1 we never should have been in this situation.

Hopefully we can kick on from here but think it's obvious certain players really aren't good enough.

Unbelievable that a player of Joe's class has just hit his first 4th innings hundred. His mentality has a top batter who can score 100s has been called into question but he's been so good and such a measured knock in a pressure environment, bar the inside edge to fine leg to get to 96 but beyond that, they didn't look like getting him out.

I said it would take a great knock and a couple of good knocks and that's what we got from Root, Stokes and Foakes.

Bairstow can fack off, get Brook in. Lees and Crawley can go, bring in Robson and Compton. I'll keep Pope in just because it's savage to give him a test at 3 and drop him.

Full refund for the crowd.....

Amazing how quiet it is on here after a win

Stokes bigging up Bairstow's knock of 16 he didn't put NZ on the back foot with such an insignificant knock. Yes he battered a few shots but unless he gets 50-70 playing that way then the other team aren't going to be bothered by it.

I get not throwing him under the bus and maybe publicly backing him so he doesn't get slammed by the media for being irresponsible makes sense. However he's going to get slammed because it was silly, especially when you watch the way Root went about things. He's quick between the wickets so can easily put pressure on the bowlers by turning 1s into 2s and 2s into 3s. Doesn't need to do it by throwing the kitchen sink at everything including balls that are going to hit the stumps.

He averages 13 to bowls directed at the stumps which is unbelievably shi!e who has the talent he does.

I can't see them dropping any player for the second Test but Crawley and Bairstow should both be out for Compton and Brook.

Will definitely complain about one day batting ruining test matches with it being 3 and a bit days. He will probably say NZ are a pub team despite being the best in the world

NZ are definitely not the best test team in the world.

That would be Australia, probably followed by India.

Thing with this current Aus team is that they can win Test matches anywhere in any conditions. India similar.

NZ are only elite in their own conditions or English conditions which mirror their own (hence their success here last year).

Good win by England..We really need England other batters to come to the party now.
Has for Root hes probably in the top 3 all time english batters for me.

They're world test champions though so they're not a pub team was more my point. I know being the champion doesn't necessarily make you the best but it was a throwaway comment about how Sandy will probably refer to them as a pub team.

Aus and India are the top 2 and England really need to make themselves part of that and make it a top 3.

I look at the aussie batting and you always feel they would be vulnerable in English conditions.. Its a matter of getting a decent score batting first to beat them.

I wouldn't call this particular NZ team the best in the world to be fair given Taylor and Watling have retired, Nicholls was injured and Williamson's form has fallen off a cliff. Still a very good side though and their bowling is up there with the best in the world.

That 1st innings was definitely a one-off and unlikely to happen again though.

I fail to see why Root would not both want to be & be demanded to be No 3

Best batsman of his generation & consistently backs it up....more non rocket science
