The UK is failing with a monarchy so they're obviously not helping. If that's the case what's the point in keeping the planets biggest spongers when so many hard working people struggle just to make ends meet?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How’s the monarchy to blame for whats going on?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's the point, with or without them the UK is circling the drain. So I ask again why keep the world's biggest spongers when so many people in the country are struggling to make ends meet?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you realise how much the UK benefits financially from the Royal Family?

Do you realise the UK would benefit financially even more without them?

Nobody knows the true figures because they are not released.
Even after a FOI request, they still haven’t been published. Ask yourself : Why? What are they hiding? Is it that they don’t benefit the country financially as much as is made out?

To be honest I don't think we would benefit more.

In terms of treasury numbers possibly, but would you actually trust the government to put it to good use?

I know I wouldn't.

Nope! However the annual cost of the royals is estimated at approx 292mil so you do the maths

Yes it is a myth and an incredibly flawed argument from the get go.

If I was handed down a huge amount of real estate I could rent it out and make billions. The fact that land shouldn't belong to me is the problem.

People would still visit without them. Indeed if you opened up the palaces etc that would get more people to see and spend.

My main issue with them has always been that it's a bit ridiculous they're classed as 'better' people than us just because of the family they're born into. If I ever met any of them I'd treat them with the same respect as anyone else. There'd certainly be no airs and graces. Where I work some colleagues won't speak with the cleaners whereas I think some of the most interesting chats come with them. We're all people and all hold the same worth

Going back to the OP, countries can be happy and successful with or without a monarchy. So why not keep ours? I would be happy to emulate the Nordic countries.

Because they're a drain on a struggling society. They're one of the only things worth privatising, take all their land, power and real estate away then let them earn some money from tv deals. They'll do absolutely fine but the weirdos who love them will be the ones paying for them.

As someone else mentioned, what would those same supporters of the royal family say if someone else announced themselves as the one true royals?

Just because something is normalised/drummed in from an early age doesn't make it not fecking strange and in fact a negative

It's such a weird pov.

Any celebrity is treated the exact same way.

Are we saying that celebrities kids should be stripped of everything that has been handed to them, and that they must be thrown out into the wilderness to fend for themselves?

In a thousand years, if David Beckham's family lives on to do fantastic things for the planet, I'm sure we will have some anti David beckhamists saying "fecking Beckham's ain't done feck all to deserve their position, they only have it because David and Victoria Beckham were absolutely fecking minted".

It's all jealousy.

I think the main thing that bugs people is the tax stuff. Yeah, they should be forced to pay every tax the average person does, but still we have bigger problems in this place than worrying about the tax the royal family hasn't paid over the years. The cost overall is miniscule, compared to the debt the country is in due to the government.

I don't really care. My view is if you have a royal family they need to be kept in a royal manner. People expect palaces, banquets, gold coaches and all the rigmarole.
It's no good having a monarchy living in a three bed semi in Barking.

Reminds me of the Queen and I

A president would cost more than the monarchy, so the savings argument is utter nonsense.
