Completely agree with the OP. Sick to death with the constant bitterness from the West in relation to Qatar. Who the hell are we to preach to them how to behave? We're full of schmbags and lowlifes in this part of the world. You don't have to agree with there culture, beliefs or hospitality, but its THEIR culture and beliefs and they should be respected.
How many on here would tolerate someone from down there street knocking on your door and telling you how and when to cut your lawn, how to raise your kids, when to clean the windows, what car to drive etc.....

Watch out Scholay, he'll be wanting to hold your hand next!

And I would have no issues with this. I am not a wayward muslim. The act of cutting peoples hands or stoning people I am against 100%. As with all religions, there are people that take it to the extreme.
I have zero problem with gay people, as already alluded I could not care less what others are doing. I am too busy trying to stay healthy and be a success in this life.
However, let other countries govern their country how they want it governed. The days of invading others countries and slavery is long gone, deal with it

It does get confusing when all the bigots unite though!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Your group is the one that gets upset over different opinions, so look in the mirror.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, I just made that very clear above... I'm tired of pretending that your views are just different to opinions
to mine... Your views are disgusting and the quicker they are consigned to history, the better (assuming you share the same views as the OP).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He usually defends people with these kind of views. Apparently the ‘woke brigade’ are the real problem. Not the pieces of shiiiiit like him, Nohlman and the OP.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Criticising illiberal views = censorship / cancellation.
Disseminating misinformation or proposing subjugation of minority groups = the marketplace of ideas.
It's a political movement that has absolutely no interest in free speech, only suppressing liberal discourse.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you turned into Barry? You've got your comment upside down.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are so many examples of contemporary right-wing populism suppressing / controlling speech in the name of protecting freedom of speech.
- UK government attempting to police university lecturers and teachers in case of left-wing bias
- UK government stuffing the BBC board / oversight functions with partisan Tories.
- UK government repeatedly putting forward the rabidly anti-liberal Paul Dacre to lead OFCOM, which regulates the media.
- UK government enacting laws that drastically restrict the right to legally protest, with the subjectively defined potential to cause a nuisance sufficient to justify arrest. This week journalists filming a protest were arrested and detained, despite showing their press credentials.
- Removing books that promote tolerance from educational syllabus and libraries in the USA - and actual book burning.
These are instances of mainstream right-wing politics in power exercising real-world curbs on freedom of speech. What are the counter examples from the liberal-left?
- Hate speech laws. If you feel that the public space should be a free for all to discriminate against and urge arm to certain groups, please feel free to defend that argument.
- The 'cancellation' narrative. Generally we have a very polarised and nasty online culture, and I'm not a fan of herd pile-ons. But let's be honest that every part of the political spectrum engages in the nastiness, bullying, calls for sacking, etc. And everyone is guilty of selective outrage when one of their allies has been attacked, while ignoring it when someone they disagree with is. Moreover, I've seen lots of examples of people being justifiably critiqued, and then using the 'cancellation' narrative to deflect from the original. Sometimes these martyrs do extensive rounds in national print and TV media talking about their cancellation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The government have their own agenda. The media and companies however, try to appease the left, because of they don't the lefty mob will come after them. They are a vocal minority that like to complain a lot. There are evil things going on both on the far right and left.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just to check whether I've understood correctly:
1) Right-wing governments suppressing liberal discourse in the various ways listed isn't relevant to a discussion of whether the right or left is more censorious?
2) 'The media' (including the Mail and sister papers, Express and sister publications, the Telegraph, the Sun and Murdoch's other media interests, Fox news, a BBC stuffed with Tory oversight appointees) is homogeneously left-wing and / appeasing the Left / suppressing right-wing views.
3) A vocal left-wing minority has reduced 'the media and companies' into a state fearful self-censorship.
Anything I misunderstood?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1) If that's what's happening, it would be relevant.
2) There are both left and right publications. The BBC are still on the left though.
3) I think they force the lefty media to go more to the far left, and companies have to bow to them or lose business.

Maybe tell that to Qatar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To be fair, the Qataris would never consider supporting the kind of imperial invasion of sovereign territory we saw in the Gulf War, Libyan Civil War, the Saudi Arabian intervention in Yemen or the Syrian Civil War, to pick four examples for absolutely no specific reason, whatsoever.

I don't see anyone suppressing liberal views.
---------
There was a post somewhere on here today where a guy was basically telling people to stop voicing opposition to homophobia in Qatar, to shut up and watch the football. I'll try and find it.
Oh, it's this exact post
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He's not an authority to cancel anyone, is he?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What are your views on hate speech?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The op did say he didn't hate them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am asking you about your opinion on hate speech in view of your opinions on cancel culture.
Do you believe people should be free to say whatever they like, regardless of whether it might instigate hatred and ultimately violence against others?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't advocate absolute free speech.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So where is the limit, where do you draw the line?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Preaching violence for one.
Here is the thing. According to a UK investigation 6500 workers died building the stadiums. According to Quatar 3 people died. If weren't such a serious topic it would be comedy gold.
How can you defend this OP?

So what do you think of muslims living in western countries applying their own shariah law?

Maybe they don't realise Barry's stuff is parody and have been inspired by him to voice their own opinions along those lines? Is there even a word for that?

‘ The days of invading others countries and slavery is long gone’
Maybe tell that to Qatar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To be fair, the Qataris would never consider supporting the kind of imperial invasion of sovereign territory we saw in the Gulf War, Libyan Civil War, the Saudi Arabian intervention in Yemen or the Syrian Civil War, to pick four examples for absolutely no specific reason, whatsoever.

I don't see anyone suppressing liberal views.
---------
There was a post somewhere on here today where a guy was basically telling people to stop voicing opposition to homophobia in Qatar, to shut up and watch the football. I'll try and find it.
Oh, it's this exact post
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He's not an authority to cancel anyone, is he?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What are your views on hate speech?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The op did say he didn't hate them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am asking you about your opinion on hate speech in view of your opinions on cancel culture.
Do you believe people should be free to say whatever they like, regardless of whether it might instigate hatred and ultimately violence against others?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't advocate absolute free speech.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So where is the limit, where do you draw the line?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Preaching violence for one.

Here is the thing. According to a UK investigation 6500 workers died building the stadiums. According to Quatar 3 people died. If weren't such a serious topic it would be comedy gold.
How can you defend this OP?

Completely agree with the OP. Sick to death with the constant bitterness from the West in relation to Qatar. Who the hell are we to preach to them how to behave? We're full of schmbags and lowlifes in this part of the world. You don't have to agree with there culture, beliefs or hospitality, but its THEIR culture and beliefs and they should be respected.
How many on here would tolerate someone from down there street knocking on your door and telling you how and when to cut your lawn, how to raise your kids, when to clean the windows, what car to drive etc.....
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Am I the only one that suspects every post like this is actually Barry?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I sometimes think that, but then at others I simply tell myself than soaking your brain in booze is just as dangerous as giving it no drugs whatsoever.

Robb - every country has its own moral codes and ideas and that’s their right. You go to another country you follow their laws and rules.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So what do you think of muslims living in western countries applying their own shariah law?

They didn't die; they were just brainwashed by the internet into thinking they were dead.

I read the first page and automatically assumed that the OP dislikes the West, hates freedom of speech and freedom of choice and then thought what would UWW think?
Then I saw his comments
