You make a solid point that if you start defining nationality by ethnicity it's a complex mess that's not helpful or relevant. Then immediately contradict yourself by declaring them 100% French.

The 4 teams are;

Brazil

Argentina

Saudi Arabia

South Korea

Wouldn't have gone for Argentina nor Brazil. Saudi, Korea, Japan, and Iran would have been my picks.

In that you're deciding that these people are 100% French. Of course they'd call themselves French if they're playing for the France team etc but I bet you most first generation immigrants wouldn't call themselves 100% anything. Probably a lot of second generation immigrants would still have a lot of cultural influences from their parents that weren't born in their home country.

Maybe I was a bit harsh. Sorry about that. But what I'm getting at is that it's ok to not be binary about these things. Being 100% anything doesn't make sense and the idea of it encourages toxic nationalism. Which I know you're not trying to do there. But yeah.

Is Matty Cash 100% Polish? Who gives a fack. Shut up and direct your concern about the world to more important things if you're going to start caring. Like nurses having to go to food banks.

(Not directed at you Thorgen jus sayin)

Surprised at Saudi tbf, I was miles off it then. Although they have strict citizenship rules, like Qatar I thought some of their squad would be naturalised players born abroad.!

It isn't any surprise that many players who have dual options choose the stronger nation regardless of what their family/heart dictates.

Benzema quite openly said he only chose France for football reasons and he isn't the only one. No biggy, the rules are the rules, it is up to them if they wanna turn their back on their family roots or not.

People ask me why I haven't gotten US citizenship and my answer is simple, I am British and wouldn't want to claim any other nationality.

They're 100% French in terms of the law. The law doesn't always care how someone sees themselves. You may even fancy yourself as a Martian but in the world you are English(assuming you are English) or whatever country's passport you hold.

I do get your point but in terms of representing your country, there is no binary. You have to chose which country to represent as you can't represent more than one country.

So in the context of football, the world cup and this article, they're 100% French as they hold French passports and are citizens of France.

So if I was to accept your pov, then tell me what percentage French they are and what percentage is the other? 50%? Maybe 70%?

How they view themselves is more personal. Society and government will have its own take.

A lot of Benzema's family and roots are also in France. Also, it's just football. Don't be melodramatic. Playing for France is not turning your back on your family roots.

It's easy for someone like you to say how you would never do what Benzema did but at the end of the day you're a nobody, like everyone else on here. Benzema is Benzema. Easy to talk when it's not you, but I don't think you'd make a different decision than Benzema if you were rich, famous and brilliant at football.

His family probably want him to play for France as they want to see him win world cups and be remembered after he's gone.

You do you, Benzema will do Benzema.

According to FIFA, there were 137 players playing in the WC for countries they were not born in (16%)
Only 4 countries had a squads of only players born in that country,

Some of the bigger names include;

Pepe - Portugal / Brazil
L De Jong - Netherlands / Switzerland
Sterling - England / Jamaica
Koulibaly - Senegal / France
Alphonso Davies - Canada / Ghana
Harry Souttar - Australia / Scotland

French / African teams were the most populous. Tunisia had 11, Senegal 10, Cameroon and Morocco with 7 and Ghana had 6.

Morocco had 14 players out of their 26-man squad born overseas

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm born in the Netherlands but I will always be Moroccan. Those facking Dutch/ french people see us as Africans when we do bad things but Dutch or French when we are good at something. Comparable with that Scottish tennis player Murray. France would be an average team without those African players.

Britain is a country. South Asia is a region. How can a person be half one country and other half a region? These labels are ridiculous.
