"This is not to say that all Tories are racists"
Most are probably.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think at the top of the party (and in any political parties that have a realistic chance of power) there are plenty of politicians who are just power-chasing psychopaths who don't have any specific ideology, and will embrace either racist or anti-racist policies, depending on what is useful to their career advancement.
Within the membership and committed support of the Conservative party, there are millions of people who aren't actively racist, just don't feel put off by the explicit racism of the policy platform of the party they campaign and vote for.

Aren't there many people of colour within the higher ranks of both major parties?
Maybe they're just not 'consciously racist' like the Crawley manager.
Also, as someone that isn't white maybe I see it slightly differently but I think you'll be surprised how many people are actually racist in the country (and most of the world). Obviously there are different levels and degrees of racism but it's all around us.

And all of them prefer murder to racism (as long as it's not someone they know very well).

It's this comment below that Robbing (I think) and me are on about!
"Murder only impacts the victim and friends and family. Racist thoughts impact anyone who encounters it."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You would need to ask a person of colour, but I'd expect hearing of racism like this would upset / anger them more than the murder of a stranger would.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
and the mask slips ..... only people of colour could be a victim of racism.
or at the very least subconsciously thats how you think.

your race had nothing to do with my opinion.
you far too narrow minded to realise it and further proving my point.
racism is not localised to one race true?
then why single out one colour?
you think a white guy getting called a milky affects the lives of a wider collective of people than a child being murdered.
you made an incredibly naïve and dumb sweeping statement that was so generalised that it covers the above point I make.

i thought POC is a term used quite often?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah it is. As was coloured, the N word before that. To me lumping all non-whites into one category and therefore white into the only other category is not quite as bad as the first two mentioned but still poor. It's basically pitting white against everything else, where white remains at the top and POC below that in another category. Also is white not a colour?
You'll likely find older African-Americans will find this term acceptable as it's better than what they were used to but younger people will find the term unacceptable. At least that's how I see it. I may be wrong.
you made an incredibly naïve and dumb sweeping statement that was so generalised that it covers the above point I make.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
In case it wasn't clear I was being a bit facetious above. I'm not inclined to give a free pass to people who are tolerant of racism or ready to harness it to further other political ends, just on the basis that if you talk to them they don't harbour any personal animosity to non-white people.
Everyone should know by now that racism is something that exists in the superstructure of society: lodged in the discourse, in the reflex associations people have with words and images, in people experiencing different outcomes based on the colour of their skin. There are two points that strike me here. First, absolutely, no one is totally immune to the racism in our discourse, whether on a totally unconscious level or consciously hating people of colour. So it's everyone's duty to examine our own preconceptions, to try to understand the assumptions and associations we're picking up from the public discourse we inhabit, and to think of that as a healthy exercise in being a better person and citizen. Secondly, in this light, I'd suggest that perhaps the height of villainy doesn't depend on how much an individual has been infected by the racism in our discourse, but on the extent to which the individual amplifies that discourse.

BTW, I literally made the point 37 mins ago that racism isn't just experienced by people of colour or committed by just White people.
Labeling people's ethnicity and colour has always been tricky and no one will every be satisfied. Growing up I was told I was half-caste and never had any issue with it, then when I moved to London for Uni I told someone that's what I was and they went mental at me.
The term BAME always annoys me, it's unnecessarily confusing. So one ethnicity is labeled by their colour but another is by their continent and then the rest are just whatever.
