Who do you blame?
FIFA, UEFA, The FA. No one's really to blame. It's just the way football has gone and it isn't the right way.
It's not an advantage for England or the smaller clubs. The times we were best was when the manager picked the players who stood out in the Top League, not in Europe. The top players were spread throughout the league, coming from many different backgrounds which I think is much better than all the players pooling in to 4 Champions League clubs
...........................
Keep those thoughts to yourself lad.
Could you honstly see Spain being any good if they picked players who did not play for Real Madrid and Barcelona.
I'm not one to disagree that the best players aren't always in the top 4, it's just I can understand why managers tend to go for these players, unless the form of a player in a lower team merits inclusion over another player at the top. In the case of Brown or Neville I don't believe this to be the case.

Because Danny Welbeck plays so well for United whan paired with Rooney, do you not think the manager should play him as the expense of potentially a better player, just for the good of the team?
I agree with the poster.
Why should it take a player to pull on a Manu shirt before being considered good enough to play for England?
And I dont buy the exposure argument either - surely the England boss has enough time on his hands to regularly see any young English player who could potentially represent the country.
After only 3 games this season the backbone of the England side for the foreseable future was touted to be Welbeck, Jones and Cleverley. Players that were barely mentioned in match reports last season.
I'm not saying they wont all turn out to be England regulars in the future. But why does it take a red shirt.
Keep those thoughts to yourself lad.

As always, you get things completely wrong. I'm not saying good players from good teams shouldn't be picked. I'm saying that better players are overlooked because they're not in the big teams.
Also, your La Liga metaphor is stupid because the best players in Spain come from every team.
RedMacca,
All very nice points, and you'd hope or anticipate any first team manager would have some influence.
You don't seem to consider though that Jones hasn't particularly improved since being at United. Nor do you tell us why United's academy has been so woeful in spite of Salex's apparent brilliance.
I posted on the United board as I believed it had relevance...

Also not what I'm getting at. Welbeck is a good player, he links well with Rooney. That's fine.
However, if Owen were to get in over some of the up and coming stars in the lower teams, that would be wrong.
What's with the bitterness? Yes, you guys produced a great player with world class potential. He was obviously noticed last year which is why a lot of teams wanted to sign him. He's not got his chance of representing England and you guys are to thank for that, is that what you want? Some recognition?
It can also work in reverse. Remember when Scott Parker was at Charlton and people started to take notice and I think he made his England debut back in 2003, he then transferred to Chelsea and his career as well as his England career took a backwards step and it has taken him 8 years to finally start racking up some caps again.
Just be proud that Jones started his career at Blackburn, but don't be bitter that he's started to get some international recognition now. How can you have expected him to get selected for England last year? No disrespect but he's now playing in a great team so of course he's going to get more recognition, but more importantly he's proving that he is worthy of playing in a big team

what a crock
There's been few United players playing for England of late
It's been mainly City players
Welbeck and Clevs haven't been brought in form somewhere else ffs
I'd like to enter this debate please

Cleverley came from Bradford City. Welbeck has only started to shine after time at Sunderland.

Scott Parker has played for England while being from a team in the Championship.

United's academy has brough through a bunch of players ffs. Just because they don't all become world stars doesn't mean it isn't doing well.
There is a current bunch that are looking V Good too

So Man Utd players like Phil Neville and Wes Brown make a great team? No, they don't. What makes a great team is selecting the best players for the job, not selecting players who play for the top clubs or are media darlings (Parker).

Leon Best, Scott Sinclair and Ross Barkley off the top of my head.

The first team is mainly Barca, because they deserve to be in. However, the bench and squad comes from all over the world.

When you have them as squad players they help make a great team. This is just Phils resume.
Manchester United
Premier League (6): 1995–96, 1996–97, 1998–99, 1999–2000, 2000–01, 2002–03
FA Cup (3): 1995–96, 1998–99, 2003–04
UEFA Champions League (1): 1998–99
I think you know what I meant. Jeez
No you're right, I did. But Cleverley is a fantastic player who is yet another example of someone who has grown at a smaller club (spell at Wigan) without recognition only to come back and be touted for England straight away.
He could have been in earlier imo.
The first team is mainly Barca, because they deserve to be in. However, the bench and squad comes from all over the world.

Oh look, it's the John O'Shea.
You'd be better off showing stats that show Phil made a positive contribution to the side. All these stats show is that the team won medals. Well done.
Leon Best, Scott Sinclair and Ross Barkley off the top of my head.
