As an aside, he recorded his occupation as a cook. Not sure I knew that but it might help explain his love of the grape?

Almost 60 years older than his favourite football team

Me & him set up base camp at table end to get away from all you young

priks. That took up half an hour of our chat. He said he was a cook but

when I got details of what he did with wine sauces and blanching etc I

eventually bludgeoned him into admitting he was a chef. He didn't have

the certification as he left school early & learned his craft on-the-job.

I would trust my life with umpteen uncertificated Mountain Leaders.

There are plenty of whankers with certs who are a danger to life.

* His last 'cook' occupations were in various homeless hostels.

Thank you, TMQ - I recall fondly the beers we had together in the Springfield Vaults a few years ago, Pleased to see you're still living such a healthy, active life, (It's not often you see the words "Springfield Vaults" & "healthy" juxtaposed so closely to each other! ) So sorry to hear the desperately sad news about Ath - I always felt that you and he were kindred spirits, team affiliations notwithstanding.

Turns out he's 86 and halfway through the 45 hours required to get his pilot's license. Comes through from Aberdeen once a week for lessons.

Fair play to the guy.. was really knowledgeable with everything planes and was clearly an enthusiast.
