Britain profited greatly from the save trade.

It was also at the forefront of its abolition if you know the history of the Boer War or the annexing of Zanzibar just to use 2 examples.

Didn't we use concentration camps in the Boer War?

Yeah we invented them. I only knew that because Jacob Rees-Mogg said it once. He looked almost proud.

This is true but as usual you just brush past the first part but expound the second part. You could at least add some meat to the bone of the first statement by detailing Britain's unmatched funding and basically sustaining a large part of the trade for an unbelievably long time.

They did all these while being the originators of the 1215 Magna Carta, and signatories to many other human rights charters. They had to pretend black people aren't human so as to mean that human rights didn't apply to them and escape their own laws on human rights.

Every country in history has benefitted through slavery at some point in history.

Slavery is not the exception in human history, it’s the rule.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OK. Tell me how Lesotho ever benefiited from slavery.

Technically, you're not wrong but this is like Boris Johnson stealing billions from the tax payer to give his already rich friends and then in his defence he says, "some people steal chickens and shoplift. Everyone has benefitted from stealing".

It was an opinion piece in the Guardian where one of the writer's friends suggested they look at the implications of the ship on Manchester's coat of arms. It got sensationalised within the peice to include the clubs, then it got picked up by other papers who added the 'call to' bit. Same old same old.

Lemn Sissay, the Manchester poet, said "we are all looking closer" and has suggested his city "needs to know it" if the ships represent slavery.

Lol Lemn Sissay thinks we need to look closer.

Translation: OMG THE WHOLE WORLD HAS GONE MAD

As I said at the start of the thread it's all click bait designed to elicit the reactions you see on this thread, sell papers and sheet like that.

People need to ask themselves why the media find such fertile grounds to make money and remain relevant in the culture wars? Why is this topic so palatable and generates money for them?

It only exists because people who think people are too easily upset are easily upset about people being too easily upset, whilst nothing actually happened.

The industrial revolution included iron, steel Re Sheffield, wool in Yorkshire. It wasn't just cotton mills.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, I think the underlying point they're trying to make is how the cotton was produced before it got here. It's just manufactured outrage.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I get that, but a view was expressed that the industrial revolution came about because of colonisation and slavery.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It did.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It didn’t come about exclusively because of colonialism.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, slavery had a role too.

My bad.

Could do a reeaaally bad but fun parody of a tory arguing that when we had them under control there was far less gun crime etc. Now look at all of the crime in America etc. You know where I am going with it.

A graph showing gun crime over time with time on the X axis with it marked where we stopped keeping them as slaves. Maybe project into the future with the scenario of us keeping them as slaves again and projecting gun crime going back down to slavery levels.
