Republic were in contact with the police about their protest weeks ago.
They told them where they were going to be going, what it was going to say on their placards, and how they planned to protest.
The police told them none of that would be a problem.
So Republic turned up this morning to set up their protest, as planned, as they’d run past the police. And members of the group were arrested and placards were confiscated.
This is how creeping authoritarianism works:
They tell you they’re serious about protecting your rights. Then they do the opposite.
Get these evil facking Tories out, for good.

I’m not against protests. I am against people ruining their fellow citizens days by stopping transport, handcuffing themselves to fences and generally being a nuisance to society.
It wouldn’t be okay for people to these things in their day ti day lives so why in the name of a protest?
If it’s peaceful and harming nobody then I think people have that right.

Why don’t you actually read up on what happened?
1. The protestors (Republic) told the police weeks ago exactly where they were going to be, what they’d be carrying, and what they’d be doing. The police literally told them that their plans were within the law.
2. The Tories rushed through legislation *this week* in advance of the coronation in order that the Home Office could give the police powers to do what they’ve done today - which is arrest people and confiscate placards BEFORE ANY PROTEST BEGAN.
3. The Minister of State for Security this week told the BBC that protests would be allowed, but that the Home Office had briefed the police on what it expected their operation to be doing this weekend.
The new legislation, by the way, and you’d know this if you’d facking bothered to read any cursory article about it, allows the police to decide what constitutes a ‘nuisance’. If they even think you may have *ideas* about causing a ‘nuisance’ (which numerous videos circulating on social media today have demonstrated can mean making even an unamplified noise, which is what protesting facking *is*), they can ban you from taking part.
You have no criminal record? Doesn’t matter. You have no intention of committing a crime? Doesn’t matter. They have no evidence whatsoever that you may be planning on committing a crime? Doesn’t matter.
They can move you, they can arrest you, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
It’s authoritarianism, plain and simple, and every facking caaaaant who continues to support the Tories has that on their conscience: The removal of fundamental rights on the whim of politicians and police officers.

Tbh I wasn't aware of the new legislation. All that does is legitimise what they would have done anyway. As you say, incredibly authoritarian.
When you break it down, it's impossible to think of anything they've actually done that has improved people's quality of life whilst they've been in Government.
Yet, if they can even avoid a national scandal for even a few months before the next general election, they'll probably get in again. They don't even need to do anything good, just nothing catastrophically bad (again) and people will vote for them.
The only thing is, they won't be able to keep their noses clean and will no doubt be involved in plenty more scandal
People have the right to protest
Though as someone that's got no interest in this it's something which happens maybe not often in people's lifetime.
So my sympathy is a bit limited and I'd also suggest it's inherently dangerous and inflammatory for them to protest, so common sense suggests they should be carted off and released for their own good.
“2. The Tories rushed through legislation *this week* in advance of the coronation in order that the Home Office could give the police powers to do what they’ve done today - which is arrest people and confiscate placards BEFORE ANY PROTEST BEGAN.”

But the issue is that the Tories are removing that right. People should be absolutely apoplectic about this, not defending it.
There are two sets of people who still support the Tories: the cripplingly self-interested, privileged upper middle class and upwards; and cultural traditionalist morrons who have bought into their transparent as water, poundshop-quality culture war propaganda bullshiiiit.
Both groups are deserving of the strongest possible contempt.
The Tories have facked the economy backwards in countless ways, they’ve further cemented and indeed widened wealth and wage gaps which will hamstring the economy for generations more, they’ve allowed wages to dive in real terms as inflation rages whilst energy companies and supermarkets have recorded all-time record profits in consecutive years, they’ve left the country trailing behind its G20 rivals by cancelling and minimising investment in R&D, they’ve destroyed the country’s relationship with its closest neighbour and most important trading partner, they’ve eviscerated public services across the board, they’ve purposefully engineered a political polarisation in the country which has strengthened and emboldened the far right, and now they’re dismantling fundamental rights hard won generations ago.
Yet still they’re in power. It does not reflect well on the British public.
