If this clown is Spurs supporter it says it all really. What a braindead post. The European Cup is The European Cup. It looks the same now as it did back then. It's just a different competition format where you can enter it by finishing 4th now instead of being league champions. It's technically easier now as more teams can enter.
As for slagging off the teams that won it then, they all had purple patches when they were the best at the time. Forest under Cloughie, Villa we're league champions the season before but underdogs against Bayern Munich and won.
Just because 5pu ds will never win it or let alone The Europa or Conference League doesn't mean that teams you deem as average now weren't great in there day.
They also never bottled it when it mattered.
They prevailed.
Became European Champions.
Just look forward to hosting The Mario and Luigi tortoise strawberry finale next summer.

they were the best team in England at the time.... thats the point ... they had to be. back then you couldnt find a hopeless Spurs team in a competition originally designed for champions

It shouldn't be considered the same comp.

Monchengladbach and Clue Brugge in two of their finals.
No wonder they have 6 of them. Had we had our days in the sun in the 70's and 80's we'd have more than we do now for sure.

Two reasons why the old format made it difficult to win:
1) You had to win your respective league
2) You only had to lose one tie in the old format and you were gone.
Nowadays, winning teams will lift the trophy having lost and drawn many matches.
You also show your ignorance when you laugh at the likes of late 70s forest and Bucharest who were both absolutely brilliant sides.

This is tantamount of whitewashing history so that only selected team gain or are hidden away.
Very poor attempt to wum
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's just removing the unimportant parts of history and focusing only on the stuff that matters.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why stop at football.
Countless other sports have seen immense physical, conditioning, dietary, technological, and format changes over the years.
For example Jack Nicholas last major win was the Masters in 86. When the game was completely different. His major wins should therefore all be expunged from the record books.
Other sporting greats (achievements) such as Pele, Fangio, Ali, Gretzky, Borg, should also be erased from history as their respective sports are no longer the same when they completed.
It's getting to the stage where the amount of fcking nonsensical, wum, just for a "laugh" articles on here are outweighing the decent football chat ones, half a dozen or so posters are a pain in my rear end, of course if others enjoy it then fair play

Well no, the point would be that teams couldn’t dominate by having the worlds best in most positions like todays top teams.
Back then, it was mostly British teams comprised of British Isles players who climbed the European mountain.

There has been massive changes though - the EU being key.
With no "3 foreigner rule" and freedom of movement etc the old system would be horrendous.
Imagine the 5th best team in the CL being Celtic or Feyenoord...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You are failing to realise what it would mean if these teams were 5th teams in the CL. They would have much better players and be more competitive. There wouldn't be players wanting to go to Spurs instead of European giants. The competition would be spread much more evenly around Europe. Not concentrated in a couple of leagues (which is currently convenient for your country)
the point would be that teams couldn’t dominate by having the worlds best in most positions like todays top teams.

Exactly, that’s what makes the competition now better

Brilliant may be a bit generous don’t you think
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You’re suggesting the Nottingham Forrest side of the late 70s wasn’t a brilliant side???
I can only put this down to your age.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just googled it. Literally don't recognise a single name in the squad.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not even Trevor Francis? Larry Lloyd? Frank Clark? Martin O Neil?
Good grief, you are young
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No lol. Literally no idea.

Look at some of the teams Liverpool beat in the 70's.
It shouldn't be considered the same comp.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Monchengladbach and Clue Brugge in two of their finals.
No wonder they have 6 of them. Had we had our days in the sun in the 70's and 80's we'd have more than we do now for sure.
Timing is everything as they say.
Still horrible dirty vermin though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You mean Brugge who were knocking out Madrid and Juventus en route to the final? That Brugge?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Madrid and Juve weren't great teams in the 70's and 80's. Madrid especially.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was Atletico they knocked out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes… they’re a Madrid team mate

OP what a load of ol’ tripe.
I’d say if anything the CL was harder to win pre 93. Teams couldn’t just cherry pick their squads from the corners of the world. Squads and teams had to be developed and coached.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, so the standard was lower compared to today. That's the whole point.

Surely that makes it harder for 98% of teams now to win it than pre-93?

I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and say the ones denouncing the quality of teams like Brugge weren't even alive at the time and as such, don't really know what they're talking about.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I wasn't but my dad was. He's been going Utd since the 60's and he says that the Barca team that beat us in two finals would have absolutely destroyed every single Liverpool team that won the European cup.
They are arguably one of the best teams of all time.
As I said timing is everything.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Then your dad is ignorant.

It would be impossible to Spurs to win it in the old format , now they can ... by that definition its far easier for teams to win, given thats it far easier to be in the comp.

Exactly, that’s what makes the competition now better
