Why is it ridiculous that in the late 70s that Forest were the best club side in Europe. Which they easily were

----------------------------------------------------------------------

One of. Certainly inferior to Liverpool but definitely up there
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They were much better than Liverpool at that time

For two years, yeah.

In fact my mate used to run Forest club shop and they had a DVD called 'The Glory Years - 79-80"

Each to his own, but imo they taste much better than left windows.

Make the CL a proper cup again and you’ll see more and more winners. Shame they changed the format, how good would a proper European cup be?

posted on 17/5/23

I don't even know what 'proper European Cup' means.

We've had four different winners in the last four years though so...

DJ's idea is to add another club from the PL each season in place of the champions of smaller nations until eventually it is 32 PL clubs and Luton Town are able to attract players over the likes of Ajax.

Then in 20 years or so when people question why are 32nd English placed Luton in the CL? He will say, well they are better than Ajax.

You created this DJ. Don't make it worse!

Probably get a different one this year too fwiw

Why would you? After the group stages it is knockout. Who among those who go out in groups do you think will beat the teams who get through to the title?

The standard in the UCL is terrible this year. Inter are in the final and they wouldn't get top 6 in EPL.

The CL is great, no idea why people want to mess with it.

We're very likely to have a 5th different winner in five years which I'd argue is more competitive than any domestic league I can think of.

posted on 17/5/23

The old format was easier to win but much much harder to qualify for initially.

Spurs were the first British team to win a European trophy beating Atletico Madrid 5-1 (Greaves 2, White 1 and Dyson 2) in Rotterdam in 1963.

Thats proper history and that's what it's all about.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m too young to have seen that game. Although I have seen the goals Dyson’s second was some goal!

I understand the group stages of the Champs are a money spinner and will never be taken away, more likely expended to create more money, is what it is and generally I've no problem with that

BUT a simple knockout comp with no seeded teams where anyone could play anyone would give a bit excitement as well surely?

Why are people pretending the CL is boring?

Genuine question.

One things for sure, the ‘lesser’ European trophies were far better competitions before the CL became bloated with too many teams.

At times the UEFA cup had a higher standard of teams than the European cup.

I would love it if the quality was more evenly distributed and you had strong teams from all over Europe, made things far more interesting and less predictable.

Exactly. The third tier competition had better teams than the competition that was meant to be for the best.

Used to like the Cup Winners Cup myself actually.

CL is still mint though, that's why it's the 6th most watched sporting event in the world.

Thing is smaller clubs rely on revenue from the 6 group matches. Going out in round 1 to Real/Barca et al would bit harsh. Plus, as seen in the FA cup, the bigger, richer clubs usually get to the latter stages/final more often than not.

Can only see this making richer clubs richer and leaving the smaller clubs with less money.

I don't think its boring just have a hankering to see a knockout comp, that I know will never happen, proper enjoy the CL, great football on a Tue and Wed, cant ask for much more than that

Going out to a far smaller club even worse, they may not even get a money spinner.

Hmm, yeah maybe fair, but the knockout games in the CL are brilliant imo and as said it's fairly likely we'll have a 5th different winner in 5 years.

Dont get me wrong the CL is great (even if the group stages can be a little tedious) but the problem is all the money is only going to a few sides which makes it predictable. Imagine if the ‘lesser’ leagues were given more money and didn’t need to sell their talent, you’d actually get some strong sides all over the continent. Back in the day playing away in Eastern Europe used to be very daunting and you’d be lucky to get a point, now they’re guaranteed 3 pointers. Last time that happened was the great Kiev side of the late 90s.

Fair point from a fiscal perspective and I agree with the money part, certainly my club Celtic benefit from it when we manage to get to the group stages on occasion and even to a lesser degree the qualys, from a football perspective I just enjoy knockout comps as well and to be fair the bigger clubs would likely dominate but just every soo often a smaller club knocking out a giant would be fun

You could extend it to competitions like the World Cup. I mean, before 1986 was it even really competitive??? Should we discount all World Cup winners pre 1986?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Only a fool would make such claim knowing teams like the Brazil of 1970s and some fascinating teams that graced World cups since, not least The Dutch team of 1974, France and Brazil of 1982?

Utter tosh to even debate this!

Whoooosh!!!
