And Moeen's specific weaknesses are exactly Australia's main strengths

He does but his batting has been going downhill for a number of years whilst Dawson's has been improving.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His average over the last year is still below Moeen's career average.
I don't think Moeen was the right way to go personally, although he may fit Bazball.
I can understand people wanting Dawson to hold up an end and because Moeen hasn't played red ball cricket for years. I don't buy that Dawson would strengthen the batting more than Moeen though, when stats suggest otherwise.
If we create flat pitches as rumoured then Head is going to be seriously tough to get out.
In some form.
Can understand the Moeen call but not sure its the right way to go. Think he's a walking wicket really but it's with the ball he will be key and need to be judged whether he's a success.
Head is a seriously underrated player. All the focus is on Labuschagne and Smith but Head averages like 60 over the last few years at a SR of over 80.

He's a lovely player to watch too. So at least we'll have some good shots to enjoy while he's racking them up over the summer
A century for Smith to follow the one for Head. Australia 336-3.

He also has a moustache which is an important part of Ashes cricket.
Have to say this is a pretty ominous watch from an England POV.

I don't think it is. Just seen a graphic that the India seamers have only bowled 40 odd balls that would have hit the stumps. For all the talk of how well Siraj and Shami bowled that's a poor stat and isn't going to build pressure on batsmen in test cricket.
One thing is for sure, with the aggressive nature of Bazball we are unlikely to see a stat like that from England's bowlers. I really think people forget how good the likes of Anderson, Broad, Woakes and Robinson can be bowling in English conditions.
Head did look a little iffy against the short ball this morning so watch us give him an 80mph short ball barrage.

Nothing is more important than moustaches.
Mark Wood should grow a tash, think he'd own it.
The England team has a disproportionate number of gingers, which limits our options on who can rock a moustache.
India struggling at 50-3 in reply to Australia's 469.

Difficult to judge as India regularly struggle batting in English conditions. Run rate is quite high at 4 an over (Sandy will be hating it). Two batsmen have left on off stump.
We know the Aussie attack is good, but I don't think India have played them well.
We tend to be quite defeatist in this country though when I comes to cricket. So I expect a lot of pessimism over the next week.

I want the Aussies to bring their best. As much as a 5-0 or something would be great as stomping the Aussies is always a laugh, an entertaining 3-2 would be a better advert for test cricket whichever way it goes.
It's a shame we aren't going to be full strength with Leach injured and Stokes not fully fit to bowl as a 4th seamer and Zak Crawley.

Was thinking this. Once this fixture was realised I read a lot of fans, especially Indian fans, making Australia massive favourites given their respective abilities in England.

Fair point
Although I have actually been confident about the summer but some decisions and injuries over the past month or two have seen that drain away.
It wasn't a good start to the day for India but a nice partnership developing between Rahane and Thakur. Rahane especially has played wonderfully and has always been one of the more underrated and underappreciated of India's batters albeit with poor form over the last few years.
They're still miles behind and I expect the Aussies to smash through the tail once they break this partnership and carry a big lead going into the second innings. But it's been enjoyable to watch nonetheless has both survived some good bowling and uneven bounce to earn the right to play some shots. It's been compelling viewing.
